Eleven diabetes medications, including Jardiance, have been linked with a significant side effect: a flesh eating bacteria complication known as Fournier’s gangrene.
If you or a loved one have been harmed by flesh eating bacteria after taking Jardiance or another of the 11 diabetes medications associated with this risk, you may be able to file a lawsuit and pursue compensation.
Basics of Jardiance
Jardiance (empagliflozin) is a type-2 diabetes drug manufactured jointly by Eli Lilly and Boehringer Ingelheim pharmaceutical companies. Jardiance belongs to a class of drugs known as sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, which have become one of the most popular options for treating type-2 diabetes since the first one was approved in 2013.
Unfortunately, Jardiance and other drugs in its class have been linked with certain side effects, including a serious risk of flesh eating bacteria.
Jardiance Flesh Eating Bacteria Side Effects
Jardiance and others in its drug class have been linked with a flesh eating bacteria risk that can affect the genitalia. It’s also known as Fournier’s gangrene. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), this condition is rare but very serious, and the use of these drugs can increase the risk for patients. Drugmakers of Jardiance and other SGLT2 inhibitors are now being required to add a new warning about the flesh eating bacteria risk.
So what exactly is the flesh eating bacteria infection known as Fournier’s gangrene? Essentially, it’s a bacterial infection of the perineum that affects the tissue under the skin in that area. The infection enters the body through a cut in the skin, allowing it to spread quickly and destroy the infected tissue.
Though Fournier’s gangrene has long been considered a risk factor for a diabetes patient, only six cases were reported in more than 30 years—until SGLT2 drugs were brought onto the market. In just five years, 12 cases of flesh eating bacteria from SGLT2 drugs have been reported. Of these patients, seven were men and five were women.
So far, the FDA has received at least 12 reports of flesh eating bacteria from patients who were taking SGLT2 inhibitors. These 12 patients were diagnosed with Fournier’s gangrene sometime between March 2013 and May 2018. All were hospitalized due to this side effect, and one patient died. For some, a single surgery was required to treat the problem, and others required multiple surgeries.
