Symptoms of SJSPersonal injury attorneys are looking for potential Feraheme lawsuits. These potential Feraheme lawsuits will likely allege that AMAG Pharmaceuticals failed to warn consumers and the medical community about dangerous side effects, such as Stevens Johnson Syndrome, associated with taking the medication.

What is Feraheme?

Feraheme, generically known as ferumoxytol, is a type of iron and is often used to treat anemia iron deficiency in patients with chronic kidney disease. Anemia is a condition that can develop in people with low iron count when the blood lacks sufficient red blood cells. Iron is an important mineral for the body, when ingested/injected it becomes a part of the blood proteins hemoglobin and myoglobin. Hemoglobin is responsible for carrying oxygen in the blood to the bodies tissues and organs. Myoglobin is a protein responsible for carrying and storing oxygen in muscle cells. Anemia is often found in people with certain chronic medical conditions, including chronic kidney disease.

What is Chronic Kidney Disease?

Chronic kidney disease is a serious condition that causes damage to the kidneys and reduces their ability to properly function. People with chronic kidney disease often develop complications such as high blood pressure, anemia, and weak bones. Chronic kidney disease may be caused by high blood pressure and diabetes. Symptoms of chronic kidney disease include having less energy, poor appetite, trouble sleeping and dry itchy skin.

Side Effects of Feraheme

Feraheme can be given in two forms, by injection or for intravenous IV use. Unwanted Feraheme side effects include bloating or swelling of the face, rapid weight gain, chest pain, skin rash, nausea or vomiting, itching, dizziness, and large hives. In some extremely serious cases, patients taking Feraheme may develop Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) or Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN). Recently medical professionals have warned patients to refrain from using Feraheme if they have ever had an allergic reaction to injectable forms of iron.

What is Stevens Johnson Syndrome?

Stevens Johnson Syndrome or SJS is a rare but serious disorder of the skin and mucous membrane. The condition often begins with flu-like symptoms but soon develops into dangerous dermatological symptoms. SJS symptoms include facial swelling, a fast-spreading red or purple rash, blisters on the mucous membranes, and in serious cases the sloughing off of skin. Treatment for Stevens Johnson Syndrome almost always require hospitalization. Victims are usually treated in the burn ward and treatment is focused on keeping victims hydrated and stopping symptoms. Hospitalization can last between weeks and months.

Overview of Feraheme Lawsuits

Stevens Johnson Syndrome lawsuits filed against AMAG Pharmaceuticals will likely claim that the company violated consumer protection laws. Claims against the company will likely include negligence, strict products liability, misrepresentation, fraud and deceit, breach of warranty and punitive damages. Settlements or awards from these cases will help victims pay past and future medical bills as well as compensate them for the pain and suffering they endured. In some cases a victim’s spouse may join a Feraheme SJS lawsuit as a co-plaintiff in order to bring a loss of consortium claim, or loss of spousal intimacy. These claims are brought in hopes of increasing the award or settlement.
