Aquastar Corp is recalling about 18,000 bags of Kroger Mercado Cooked Medium Peeled Tail-Off Shrimp due to potential contamination with cesium-137, a radioactive isotope that can damage DNA and increase cancer risk if consumed over time.
The recall, announced on Aug. 27 and published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Aug. 28, applies to 2-pound bags of Kroger Mercado Cooked Medium Peeled Tail-Off Shrimp, identified by UPC 011110626196 and lot codes 10662 5139 and 10662 5140, with best-before dates of Nov. 19 and 20, 2027.
The shrimp, distributed by PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati of Indonesia, may have been exposed to unsanitary conditions leading to cesium-137 contamination, according to the FDA.
“FDA is working with distributors and retailers that received product from PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati after the date of first detection of Cs-137 by Customs and Border Protection,” the recall states.
Shrimp contamination prompts consumer caution
The FDA is actively investigating cesium-137 contamination in shipping containers and frozen shrimp products processed by PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati. Although no illnesses have been reported, the FDA has recommended a recall for products from this supplier that might pose a safety concern.
“At this time, no product that has tested positive or alerted for Cesium-137 (Cs-137) has entered the U.S. commerce,” the FDA statement says.
Consumers are advised to dispose of or return the affected shrimp to the place of purchase for a full refund.
Aquastar Corp is taking proactive measures by recalling the potentially contaminated shrimp and working with the FDA to ensure consumer safety. The company is cooperating with distributors and retailers to remove the affected products from shelves.
For more information, consumers can contact Aquastar at 1-800-331-3440, available Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm PST.
Aquastar says it has not received any reports of illness related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Earlier, the FDA issued an urgent recall of frozen shrimp processed by PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati, including Great Value products sold at Walmart.
