Jeep battery defect class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Thomas Teger filed a class action lawsuit against FCA US LLC.
  • Why: Teger claims FCA sold certain Jeep Wrangler vehicles that contained a “serious” battery system defect.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.

FCA US manufactured and sold Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4xe vehicles containing defective battery systems, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Thomas Teger’s class action lawsuit claims the battery system in his model year 2021 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4xe contains a “serious” design defect that makes the vehicle “unreasonably dangerous.”

“Plaintiff believes that the unreasonably dangerous and defective battery is dangerous to his health, and the safety of Plaintiff and others who may ride in his vehicle,” the Jeep class action says.

Teger wants to represent a nationwide class and California subclass of persons or entities who are current or former owners and/or lessees of model year 2021-2023 Jeep Wrangler Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles equipped with a defective battery system.

FCA instructed Jeep Wrangler vehicle owners not to park near structures, class action claims

Teger claims FCA notified him via a bulletin last November that the battery in his Jeep Wrangler vehicle could fail, causing a fire to occur whether the ignition was on or off.

“However, even despite awareness of this vehicle defect, there was no repair or fix made available to owners of those defective vehicles,” the Jeep class action says.

Teger argues that, instead, FCA simply instructed affected vehicle owners not to park their cars inside buildings, near structures or near other vehicles, prior to a “final repair” being completed.

The class action lawsuit claims FCA is guilty of breach of covenant of good faith and fair dealing and violating the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act and California’s Unfair Business Practices Act and Song-Beverly Act

Teger demands a jury trial and requests injunctive relief and an award of actual, general, special, incidental, statutory, compensatory and consequential damages for himself and all class members.

A group of consumers filed a similar class action lawsuit against FCA earlier this year over claims the automaker sold model year 2021-2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid electric vehicles containing defective hybrid propulsion systems that could cause vehicle fires and explosions

  1. Christine Corning says:

I bought on 2021 Wrangler 4xe and have never been able to charge it as a result of the safety issues. It has lost value and I’m unable to trade it in. This vehicle has not work as designed since I purchased it and there have been no offers of compensation.

  2. Chazz Hennessy says:

I purchased a 2023 JEEP Rubicon 4xE and learned later that there is a recall for the defective battery. I can’t park my vehicle near any structures do to the fear that I may cause harm to myself, my family or others nearby. I also don’t like to drive people around in it out of fear for someone else getting hurt. However I am stuck with it because I cannot get out of the loan. I NEED to be included in this lawsuit.

  3. Stacy Phillips says:

I purchased a used 2022 Rubicon 4xe in Oct. 2024. I didnt even drive it for 2 months due to a surgery. Since the recall remedy for the battery fire hazard it’s been in the service department twice within 1 month. Im told it needs to have a new battery and it will take 6 months to get the part. What happened to me while driving on the freeway I lost power and had no control while on the freeway. It lasted seconds and the engine light was on immediately when that happened. I took side streets to get it to the mechanic and it was jumpy lossing power off and on and once having to make a left hand turn with oncoming traffic. I’m afraid to drive it. I was mislead when I purchased this vehicle because it came with a rebuilt title for what was a radio and faulty wires preventing it to charge. They had no car fax to show me because of the title but was told the issue was fixed and it seemed minor to me so I made the purchase. I had no problem the first 3 months. Took it for the recall remedy and now it’s a safety hazard to drive. They should pull everyone of these hybrids from being on the road because of the safety hazards and risk to drive.

  4. Michael Venturini says:

I recently turned in my 4xe lease and paid ridiculous amounts for a vehicle that had to sit uselessly for months due to this issue. I’d like to be included in the class action!

  5. Jill DeRosa says:

I have a 2023 jeep 4e. Taken it in twice for recalls, the last one last week. Today the car refused to start…all battery lights on (lightning, wrench, battery). This is a lease, so I expected to not have to deal with so many car problems.
