CBS4 News in Miami reports that a local woman, Beth M., has been recently injured by her exploding pressure cooker, but her model is one that has been connected more than a few times with injuries.

Morales owns a Tristar Pressure Cooker XL and was cooking a meal with her husband in 2016. Beth, believing the pressure cooker was done with the meal, went to check on its progress.

She claims that she let out the steam valve twice. After that, Beth alleges, she attempted to twist the lid to see if it would twist. If it was locked then she knew there was still steam and pressure inside. If it twisted, it was ready to be opened.

Allegedly, the lid twisted, indicating to her that it was ready to be opened. Beth then opened the pressure cooker. At this time, boiling hot liquid was ejected from the Tristar pressure cooker and left her with 2nd degree burns.

Her exploding pressure cooker, she claims, burned her on her hands, arms and chest.

When speaking with CBS4 News, she said, “I look at myself in the mirror and I cry because I’m not like I used to be anymore.” She believes that she will have to live with the scars of her exploding pressure cooker for the rest of her life.

After her incident with the exploding pressure cooker, Beth searched online to see if there were others who had been injured in the same manner.

She found that in the last two years, the Consumer Product Safety Commission had pages and pages of registered complaints regarding the Tristar Pressure Cooker XL. Beth has filed a lawsuit against the makers of her pressure cooker alleging that the kitchen appliance is defective in nature.

Her attorney told CBS4 News that there are many victims of pressure cookers that explode in consumers’ kitchens. “This product is on TV, it’s in Kohl’s and Bed Bath and Beyond, J.C. Penney.  It’s one of the most widely used and widely marketed pressure cookers that’s out there today.  And there may be thousands and thousands of users who don’t know about this potential danger,” he told the news outlet.

Pressure cookers are small kitchen appliances that cook meals quickly because of increased pressure inside the appliance. The cooking temperature increases as the pressure increases which causes food to cook at a much quicker rate than it would otherwise.

However, some claim that certain pressure cookers are inherently dangerous because they have been defectively designed and manufactured. Some of the “safe lock lids” on certain pressure cookers may not work as they should, plaintiffs in products liability lawsuits claim. They should prevent a user from opening the lid, but sometimes do not, as was true in Beth’s case.

Beth has told the news outlet that she will never use a pressure cooker again. Her attorney urges all who own them to use them with caution.
