Essure is a form of permanent, non-surgical form of birth control manufactured by Bayer HealthCare. Though it was seen as a breakthrough for women who wanted permanent contraception, the Essure device may come with more complications than benefits.
Many women reported that the Essure device caused a range of dangerous side effects that were not announced in warnings and advertisements for the drugs.
Reported side effects of the Essure device include:
- allergic reactions
- bloating
- ectopic pregnancy
- excessive bleeding
- miscarriage
- organ perforation
- pelvic pain
- rashes
These side effects can reportedly be serious and dangerous, having a serious impact on a patient’s life.
Essure is a non-hormonal form of birth control that was originally manufactured by a company called Conceptus and was then purchased by Bayer. It is the only non-surgical method of permanent sterilization available for women, and has widely been touted as a safer alternative to the common procedure of tubal ligation, or having one’s “tubes tied.”
The Essure device consists of two flexible metal and polyester coils that are placed inside each of the fallopian tubes. This is done through a non-surgical implantation procedure in which the coils are inserted through the vagina and uterus, and then one coil is placed in each fallopian tube. Sterilization occurs when tissue develops around the metal coils over the course of a few months, thus blocking conception.
Patients who use Essure must be evaluated regularly by their doctor to determine that the procedure was successful and the device is effective in preventing pregnancy.
Essure users have already filed a lawsuit against Bayer, claiming that the company misled women about how safe and effective the Essure device is. The lawsuit takes issue with the premarket approval of Essure.
Ensure was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2002 via a fast-track review system. Reportedly, it was approved rapidly because it seemed like an advantageous alternative to surgical sterilization and offered a faster recovery time than surgical sterilization.
Women claim that the fast-track review system meant that the device was insufficiently investigated before it was released onto the market, exposing women to many harmful side effects. Allegedly, Essure should have been subjected to further study and more thorough testing before it was released onto the market.
Reportedly, over 4,500 consumer reports have been filed that claim that the Essure device caused adverse side effects and complications.
Yet, the Essure device is still on the market and Bayer is allegedly not warning women about the potential of severe side effects. Because of the large number of reactions allegedly due to the Essure device, consumers have launched a campaign to have the device recalled.
Lawyers have been investigating consumer claims that the Essure device form of birth control causes serious complications. If you had the Essure device implanted and you experienced complications or side effects, you may have a legal claim.
Joining an Essure lawsuit could help hold Bayer accountable for releasing a dangerous medical device and could help you receive compensation for physical, emotional or financial injury you suffered as a result of your use of the Essure device.
In general, Essure lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
