Ninety-three plaintiffs have joined together to file an Essure birth control lawsuit against the makers of the permanent contraceptive device claiming various adverse health conditions including excessive pain and heavy menstrual bleeding among other symptoms.
The plaintiffs together have filed this Essure birth control lawsuit against Bayer claiming that their experiences with the Essure contraceptive system were fraught with severe side effects and that Essure was harmful to their health.
What is Essure?
Essure is the only form of permanent, non-surgical birth control available to American women. The effects of the Essure system have been compared with tubal ligation; however, with a tubal ligation procedure, the patient must undergo surgery.
The Essure device is implanted vaginally, and thus does not require surgery. The medical device is made up of two metal coils. Each coil is placed inside one of the fallopian tubes of the patient.
Over time, scar tissue begins to form around the small Essure coil which blocks the fallopian tube. This ensures that the sperm and egg cannot meet because the fallopian tube is blocked. About three months post-procedure, a physician checks to make sure that the tube is in fact blocked and that permanent sterilization has taken place.
Essure Complications
Essure may seem like a perfect alternative to tubal ligation to make sure a woman who has already completed her family does not have any more children. However, many women have complained of complications associated with Essure and many have filed an Essure birth control lawsuit.
In fact, Essure has been connected with so many life-altering problems worldwide, that some countries no longer allow women to use it as an option for contraception.
The original premarket studies concerning Essure show side effects such as cramping, dizziness, perforation, device migration, vomiting, device expulsion and fainting.
However, as Essure became more popular among women of childbearing age, serious reports of life-changing injuries associated with Essure began to surface.
These injuries included device breakage, severe abdominal pain, heavy periods, severe headaches, fatigue, extreme weight gain or loss and device migration.
For example, one plaintiff, Shawnee B., a forty-six-year-old woman from Missouri, had the Essure coils implanted. According to this Essure birth control lawsuit, she began to suffer from “increasingly severe pain and discomfort, including abdominal pain, a Lupus diagnosis, and pain during intercourse.”
Her symptoms were so bad that a few years later, she underwent a surgery to remove the Essure coils.
Another plaintiff, Bobbie B., age thirty-seven, also was implanted with Essure. She claims, according to this Essure birth control lawsuit, that she suffered from “increasingly severe pain and discomfort, including heavy menstrual bleeding, chronic pelvic pain, abdominal pain, abdominal bloating, excessive migraine headaches, anxiety, chronic fatigue, and pain during intercourse.”
When she went in to be examined, an ultrasound showed that one of the coils could not be visualized at all.
Most of these plaintiffs claim that they will never be able to regain their pre-Essure life because of life-changing injuries they have faced because of the Essure device.
This Essure Birth Control Lawsuit is Case No. 4:17-cv-02000 in the Circuit Court of the City of St. Louis, State of Missouri.
In general, Essure lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
