An Elite electric pressure cooker is in the center of class action lawsuit investigation, after consumers report suffering from unexpected burns and injuries.
Some pressure cooker owners allege the cooking devices can unexpectedly explode and sendboiling contents onto them.
According to consumer reports, the explosions stem from the sealing lid not properly closing and the rising temperature and pressure eventually become too much for the device to contain.
Pressure cookers are very popular cooking devices, used to quickly cook food utilizing steam from high temperatures and pressure. These devices are either supposed to have a safety lock or sealing lock component that keeps the lid shut during the cooking process and prevents the lid from snapping open when the pressure reaches a certain point.
This mechanism ultimately prevents scalding hot water and other contents from spilling all over the consumer. Failure of the locking component can potentially result in second or third degree burns.
Overview of Pressure Cooker Explosions
When pressure cookers prepare food, the pressure and temperature rises up to 15 pounds per square inch (psi) and up to 250 ℉. Due to rapidly increasing pressure and temperature, it is important for manufacturing companies to confirm the device works as marketed before being released to the public.
These safety locks are only supposed to release when the device is safely depressurized, but consumer reports have suggested otherwise. According to consumer reports, not only did the safety locks on these devices fail but the safety lid blew off.
Along with second and third degree burns, consumers reported suffering steam burns due to being in close proximity of the device when the lid flew off. Consumers are opting to file legal action against the manufacturing companies for allegedly failing to warn them against the risk of potential pressure cooker explosions.
Plaintiffs in these pressure cooker lawsuits say they relied upon the marketing statements given by the company and had no reason to be wary of potential burn injuries.
Consumers may qualify to join a class action investigation if they purchased an Elite electric pressure cooker from the Home Shopping Network (HSN) in 2015 or earlier that did not work as it was intended.
Elite Electric Pressure Cooker Lawsuit
There was already a pressure cooker lawsuit filed over alleged problems with an Elite electric pressure cooker, wherein a California couple sued Maxi-Matic and Kohl’s. The pressure cooker lawsuit alleged the device exploded without warning, covering the wife in chicken broth and resulting in second and third degree burns.
While the Elite electric pressure cooker is one of the primary focuses of this class action investigation, consumers who purchased a different defective pressure cooker and experienced difficulties may be able to file legal action.
In June 2017, an Ohio federal judge verified class certification of a pressure cooker lawsuit alleging Tristar pressure cookers which contained a design defect that could result in explosions. This alleged safety defect prevented the safety lid from correctly sealing, which eventually resulted in the boiling contents causing serious burn injuries.
