Eliquis Internal BleedingAn Indiana woman has brought an Eliquis wrongful death lawsuit against Bristol-Myers Squibb on behalf of herself and her late husband’s estate.

Plaintiff Gearldine B. claims that Eliquis, manufactured by Bristol-Myers Squibb, is responsible for the death of her husband, Henry B.

Gearldine says Henry was prescribed Eliquis, also know as apixaban, on July 21, 2014. Just a few months later, on Sept. 28, 2014, Henry died.

Allegations Point to Eliquis Wrongful Death

Gearldine claims that Henry suffered from severe physical, economic and emotional injuries as a result of Eliquis.

She claims that an intracerebral hemorrhage, caused by Eliquis, led to his death.

According to this Eliquis wrongful death lawsuit, Henry’s Eliquis-related bleeding caused him significant harm before he died.

This harm included severe pain and suffering, medical expenses and other economic and noneconomic damages.

Gearldine claims that Bristol-Myers Squibb “negligently and fraudulently represented to the medical and healthcare community, including [Henry’s] prescribing doctor, the Food and Drug Administration, … [Henry himself] and the public in general, that Eliquis had been tested and was found to be safe and effective for its indicated uses.”

She also claims that in order for Bristol-Myers Squibb to sell more of their product, they purposely induced the medical community and the public to recommend, dispense and purchase Eliquis by concealing what it knew about Eliquis side effects.

This, she claims, is the reason behind her husband’s death.

Gearldine, according to this Eliquis wrongful death lawsuit, accuses Bristol-Myers Squibb of having a “callous, reckless, willful [and] depraved indifference to the health, safety and welfare of [Henry].”

Because of this indifference on the defendant’s part, Henry suffered from an intracranial hemorrhage that caused him physical pain, mental anguish, diminished enjoyment of life, and ultimately his own death.

What is Eliquis?

Eliquis was introduced by Bristol-Meyers Squibb in 2012. It is prescribed to prevent stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation and who are at risk for blood clots in patients who have undergone hip or knee replacement surgery.

It was designed to compete with warfarin, the widely accepted blood thinning medication used to treat most patients in need.

Eliquis has been extensively promoted as a superior alternative to warfarin, which needs patients to adhere to a strict diet and regular blood monitoring.

However, Eliquis has been connected with adverse bleeding events like Henry’s intracranial bleeding. Eliquis, unlike warfarin, does not have a bleeding antidote to aid in the case of uncontrollable bleeding.

If you believe you or a loved one has suffered from an Eliquis adverse event, including uncontrollable bleeding or death, you may be entitled to compensation.

The Eliquis Wrongful Death Lawsuit is Case No. 1:16-cv-07601, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
