An Illinois couple has filed an Abilify hypersexuality lawsuit against the drug’s manufacturing company, Bristol-Myers Squibb, alleging the drug caused the wife to develop destructive compulsive behaviors.
Plaintiffs Lisa D. and Joseph D. file the Abilify hypersexuality lawsuit in Florida federal court. The lawsuit was filed on Jan. 26, 2018.
According to the Abilify hypersexuality lawsuit, it was between 2006 and 2016 that Lisa took Abilify to treat a psychiatric condition.
However, she claims that following Abilify usage, she developed “compulsive behaviors, including, but not limited to, gambling and compulsive sexual behavior,” the lawsuit states.
The Abilify hypersexuality lawsuit was filed on multiple counts including strict liability, breach of express warranty, breach of implied warranty, negligence, negligence per se, negligent misrepresentation, violation of consumer protection law, fraudulent concealment, loss of consortium, and punitive damages.
Abilify Overview
Many patients taking Abilify that have suffered losses as a result of compulsive behaviors from taking the antipsychotic medication have filed lawsuits against Bristol-Myer Squibb. These lawsuits are filed with the hopes for recovering compensation for financial losses, among other damages.
Under federal law, drug manufacturing companies are required to notify the public of severe side effects associated with the drugs that they manufacture and sell. However, according to lawsuits filed against Bristol-Myers, the warnings were inadequate when patients began to suffer from Abilify’s harmful and serious side effects.
Some damages that patients have reported have included neuropsychiatric injury, physical injury, emotional distress, a spouse’s loss of consortium, and financial stability losses, including economic and gambling losses.
Potential compensation for someone who has suffered severe Abilify side effects may include:
• Compensation for financial hardship and/or emotional anxiety
• Punitive damages against Abilify
• Compensation for decreased quality of life
• Expenses for treatment of compulsive behaviors and/or compulsive gambling
• Monetary recovery from gambling and other addictions
Abilify is an anti-psychotic medication prescribed to treat a variety of medical conditions. However, many lawsuits have been filed alleging warning and design defects, with claims that the drug causes patients to develop gambling addictions among many other compulsive behavior side effects.
Some common types of compulsive behavior side effects have included gambling, binge eating, sexual activity, and shopping. Moreover, while the purpose of Abilify is to decrease effects of psychiatric conditions such as depression, mood swings, visual and auditory hallucinations, and suicidal thoughts, there are many other common side effects to Abilify. These side effects may further allow for the attention of an Abilify attorney. These include:
• Headaches
• Fatigue
• Anxiety
• Dizziness
• Insomnia
• Constipation
• Weight gain
• Suicidal tendencies
• Difficulty with pregnancy
• Blurred Vision
• High blood sugar
Many patients could suffer similar side effects from a similar atypical antipsychotic medication, Rexulti (brexpiprazole), recently approved for the treatment of major depression and schizophrenia.
