Dr. Bronner’s toothpaste class action overview:
- Who: Plaintiff Bianca Johnston filed a class action lawsuit against All One God Faith Inc., which does business as Dr. Bronner’s.
- Why: Johnston alleges Dr. Bronner’s misrepresented to consumers that its toothpaste products contain chemicals that are safe for human health.
- Where: The Dr. Bronner’s class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.
A new class action lawsuit alleges Dr. Bronner’s misled consumers by marketing its toothpaste products as being made with ingredients that are safe for human health when, in reality, they contain powerful neurotoxins.
Plaintiff Bianca Johnston claims Dr. Bronner’s toothpaste contains mercury, lead and arsenic in concentrations that are harmful to human health, despite the product being marketed as containing “safer chemicals.”
Johnston wants to represent a nationwide class and California subclass of consumers who purchased Dr. Bronner’s toothpaste for household use and not for resale.
Dr. Bronner’s failed to disclose presence of heavy metals, class action claims
Johnston claims Dr. Bronner’s failed to disclose the presence of heavy metals in its toothpaste on the packaging or on its website.
The lawsuit cites a report published in April 2025 by the product safety advocacy group Lead Safe Mama, which found detectable levels of lead, mercury and arsenic in Dr. Bronner’s toothpaste. The concentrations were 160.0 parts per billion (ppb) for lead, 6.0 ppb for mercury and 23.0 ppb for arsenic, the lawsuit says.
Johnston alleges that these levels exceed safety standards set by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for bottled water, which are 2 ppb for mercury and 10 ppb for arsenic.
The plaintiff says she relied on Dr. Bronner’s misrepresentations and omissions when deciding to purchase the company’s toothpaste products. She claims she would not have purchased the toothpaste if she had known it contained heavy metals.
Johnston is seeking an order requiring Dr. Bronner’s to recall all toothpaste products that do not disclose the presence of heavy metals, enjoining the company from selling toothpaste that contains heavy metals, and restoring monies to the proposed class members.
A similar class action alleges Tom’s of Maine’s Kid’s Natural Fluoride-Free Toothpaste Silly Strawberry is also contaminated with unsafe levels of lead and arsenic.
