Dozens of ground cinnamon brands recalled due to elevated lead levels

The Food and Drug Administration has recalled an additional 12 brands of ground cinnamon due to concerns over elevated lead levels. This action comes as the holiday baking season approaches, urging consumers to check their spice cabinets for potentially unsafe products.

The lead recall, announced on Sept. 12, includes products distributed by various retailers nationwide. The affected brands include Jiva Organic, Super Brand and Asli, among others. 

Testing revealed lead concentrations in these products ranging from 2.03 to 7.68 parts per million (ppm), which is above safe levels. According to the FDA, lead contamination can occur through soil, water or during processing, and even small amounts can be harmful over time, especially to children and pregnant women.

“Long-term exposure to elevated levels of lead in the diet could contribute to adverse health effects,” the FDA noted in its guidance. Consumers are advised to discard these products immediately and consult healthcare providers if exposure is suspected.

Cinnamon recall highlights potential health risks

The FDA’s cinnamon recall notice emphasizes the potential health risks associated with prolonged lead exposure, particularly for vulnerable populations, such as children and pregnant women. 

The recall includes products sold in states across the U.S. The FDA has been actively sampling ground cinnamon at retail establishments to ensure consumer safety.

“Consumers should avoid using the affected products and discard them immediately,” the FDA stated. The agency continues to monitor imported spices closely to prevent further contamination issues.

To address the issue, the FDA is working with states to test cinnamon sold directly to consumers and at import points. The agency has sent reminders to manufacturers and importers to voluntarily test their products to ensure safety.
