Bayer Corporation is facing a new Essure lawsuit from a multitude of women alleging similar injuries.
Over a dozen women are claiming that they suffered severe and unexpected Essure problems which were not mentioned on the product’s label.
These Essure side effects included the device breaking apart or completely failing, often causing a need for the device’s removal. One of the women involved in this conjoined Essure lawsuit is Colorado plaintiff Kendra C., who had the Essure birth control implemented for female sterilization purposes.
The Essure birth control device consists of several metal coils, and is the only non surgical method for permanent female sterilization on the market. Many women choose the Essure birth control over traditional tubal ligation for being less invasive and requiring less recovery time.
Kendra was no different as she had the Essure birth control implanted in October 2010, and had initially responded well to the device with the coils in the proper location. However, soon after the implantation, Kendra began experiencing adverse Essure side effects including abdominal bloating, large blood clots, pelvic pain, and heavy menstrual bleeding.
In fact these Essure problems became so bad that Kendra had to visit the emergency room several times, with physicians wondering if she had miscarriage due to the extent of the bleeding. In November 2015, diagnostic testing revealed that the Essure coils had perforated her fallopian tubes and had migrated away from the implant site.
This complication forced Kendra to undergo a hysterectomy to remove the Essure birth control on Nov. 16, 2015. According to the Essure lawsuit, Kendra had never experienced these complications before getting the contraceptive implanted.
Due to the adverse Essure problems, Kendra has suffered serious and permanent injuries that will effect her everyday life, according to her claim. Like the other women in this Essure lawsuit, Kendra states that she never would have had the device implanted if she had known about the potential injuries.
Essure Birth Control Information
The Essure birth control was approved by the FDA in 2002, and was originally made by Conceptus Inc. After Bayer Corporation acquired the rights for the contraceptive, the company has benefited from the profits and has continued to advertise the Essure birth control product as a safer and more effective sterilization method than tubal ligation.
As mentioned before, the Essure birth control is the only permanent contraceptive available in the United States that gives women an alternative to hysterectomy. The Essure birth control consists of two metal coils that are directly implanted into the woman’s fallopian tubes, which eventually swells and blocks the tubes.
This ultimately prevents fertilization and makes for a much less invasive method for female sterilization. However a number of women have reportedly suffered severe Essure side effects, resulting in having the device explanted and sustaining permanent injuries.
Women who have suffered Essure problems may be eligible to file legal action against Bayer Corporation, for failing to warn them against these adverse effects. Potential claimants should contact a specialized lawyer, to determine if they have an Essure lawsuit.
The Essure Birth Control Complications Lawsuit is Case No. 1622-CC00690, in the Circuit Court of St. Louis, Missouri.
In general, Essure lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
