Composition with variety of drug pills and container. Those who take Dilantin for seizure symptoms already have to contend with conditions affecting the functioning of their brain. In addition to that, many also have to deal with added Dilantin neurological side effects.

Dilantin, generically known as phenytoin, has been on the U.S. market for decades for treatment against seizures. It is often used during surgeries to keep patients from experiencing seizures.

Currently, it is not the first medication physicians reach for in treating long-term seizure disorders, but it is still one of the most widely used drugs in the world.

The World Health Organization listed Dilantin on its list of Essential Medicines because of its dependable history and because it is very low cost.

However, there have been reports of devastating Dilantin neurological side effects for its users, especially those who use Dilantin for longer periods of time.

One of the more severe Dilantin neurological side effects that users reported is a condition know as cerebral or cerebellar atrophy. Cerebral atrophy occurs when the neurons in the brain begin to break down prematurely. Naturally over time, neurons in the brain atrophy, and time, age and different diseases can cause the atrophy of the brain and the loss of  these neurons.

However, Dilantin has been shown to speed up this process. Atrophy in the brain can be generalized or focalized. When it is generalized, it is known as cerebral atrophy. When it is focuses on the cerebellum, a part of the brain that controls large motor movements and speech among other things, it is called cerebellar atrophy.

The cerebellum is a large part of the brain comprised of two hemispheres and is located at the back of the brain behind the brain stem. It is what allows the body to move precisely and balanced.

Cerebellar atrophy can be especially debilitating for an individual who is experiencing these Dilantin neurological side effects. Cerebellar atrophy can present very much like a stroke, and in some cases, it can be difficult to tell the difference.

Those experiencing these types of Dilantin neurological side effects may have problems with movement, posture, balance, speech and coordination. When this part of the brain is damaged due to Dilantin neurological side effects or other reasons, it can result in the individual lacking balance, moving slowly and experiencing tremors and shaking. Also, a condition known as nystagmus and characterized by quick, unstable eye movements is possible.

Speech is often slurred and the body will experience an unsteady and lurching walk.

Cerebellar atrophy can be seen in Dilantin users who have used this medication for a long period of time and at high dosages. It is believed that if a patient has experienced cerebellar atrophy due to Dilantin neurological side effects, the effects can be reversed if the patient discontinues the drug.

Dilantin withdrawal should be supervised by a physician.
