Lipitor DiabetesPatients taking diabetes drugs expect to soon see lower blood sugar levels, improved health and decreased risks for further complications related to their metabolic disease. However, what they often do not expect is that the same drugs may cause problems that are much more severe than the condition they are trying to treat.

This is the case for some individuals who have taken diabetes drug Xigduo. Xigduo is a medication that combines dapagliflozin (brand name Farxiga) with metformin HCl into a single tablet. Many patients’ symptoms have improved on metformin, but some have not improved as much as a physician would like. So the combination drug adding dapagliflozin offers a hopeful alternative.

Xigduo (along with component drug Farxiga) is an SGLT-2 inhibitor which affects the sodium glucose-linked transporter 2 (SGLT-2) proteins that are located in the kidney ducts. The medications block the action of SGLT-2, blocking reabsorption of blood glucose back in the body and allowing it to be excreted through the kidneys into the urine.

Complications of Diabetes Drug Xigduo

Last May, the FDA issued a warning that diabetes drug Xigduo and other SGLT-2 inhibitor drugs may lead to ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis is a condition that results from a large amount of ketones in the blood. Ketones are acidic compounds, and too much of them in the blood can cause dangerous problems.

Ketoacidosis can lead to cardiovascular events like blood clots, dangerously low blood pressure, and heart attack. Electrolyte imbalance that can produce abnormal heart rhythms, dehydration and kidney failure may also result from ketoacidosis.

Symptoms of ketoacidosis include a fatigue, nausea, stomach pain, breathing difficulties, confusion and more. Coma can also result from ketoacidosis.

Additionally, diabetes drug Xigduo has also been reported to be linked to kidney failure. With kidney failure, the organs are no longer able to keep up with the body’s detoxification needs, and individuals become toxic as a result. When kidney failure progresses to the most advanced stages, it can lead to death because the body needs proper ongoing detoxification in order to properly function.

Some critics say that because diabetes drug Xigduo stimulates part of the kidneys, kidney failure can result.

Compensation for Diabetes Drug Xigduo Complications

If you or a loved one has developed complications related to diabetes drug Xigduo, ketoacidosis, kidney failure or other serious complications, you may be eligible to seek legal compensation from the manufacturer.

Plaintiffs who go on to file products liability lawsuits against drug manufacturers often allege that the drugs were defectively designed and manufactured, or that they were improperly marketed by failing to warn consumers of all of the risks of complications associated with using the drug.

Successful claimants have gone on to receive monetary awards from the manufacturer to cover the costs of medical expenses, pain and suffering, emotional distress, lost wages, loss of spousal companionship and more.

An experienced attorney familiar with the complications that arise from diabetes drug Xigduo can review your case at no charge and can help you understand the legal opportunities that are open to you.

In general, diabetes medication lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
