DePuy ASR hip implant hip replacement settlementMore than five hundred thousand Americans have had hip replacement surgery. Many of those patients may be entitled to a portion of a DePuy hip replacement settlement.

Several years ago, in 2013, DePuy agreed to pay a total of $600,000 to settle three outstanding DePuy ASR hip lawsuits for plaintiffs who needed to have their metal hip removed because of severe and life-altering complications.

These plaintiffs were some of the first to receive a DePuy hip replacement settlement regarding the DePuy ASR hip implant. Each of those plaintiffs each received $200,000, which is at the very low end of what should be expected from a DePuy hip replacement settlement like this.

Attorneys surmise that a fair DePuy hip replacement settlement should be in the $200,000 to $500,000 range.

Additionally, there is now a DePuy hip replacement settlement that applies to those patients who underwent a DePuy ASR hip revision surgery after March 2015.

The Problems with DePuy ASR Hip Implants

Even though over a half a million patients in America have received metal-on-metal hip implants, there have been many complications that have resulted in scores of hip implant lawsuits and a massive DePuy hip replacement settlement.

Some of these complications include the failure of the metal-on-metal implant which may require early replacement, dislocated hip, leaking of toxins such as chromium and cobalt, and increased risk of cancer or cardiomyopathy.

Additional complications include loss of bone strength or structure, bone fractures, tissue death in surrounding tissue, non-cancerous tumors or pseudotumors, cobalt poisoning and metallosis.

Metallosis is metal poisoning from tiny shards of metal that can be shed into the surrounding tissue near a hip implant when a metal-on-metal hip implant moves. These metals can enter the bloodstream and harm the patient.

In August 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration made known that DePuy was voluntarily recalling 93,000 DePuy ASR hip implants throughout the world including nearly 40,000 in the United States alone.

This voluntary recall was in response to new data that found that 13 percent of DePuy ASR hip implants required hip revision surgery because of severe complications.

These DePuy ASR problems are very similar to the problems faced by patients who have one of DePuy’s other hip replacement systems called the Pinnacle.
