There have been thousands of DePuy hip implant settlements over the past several years, after numerous patients alleged serious metal hip implant complications.

Patients who have received ASR hip implants since March 2015 and allegedly suffered complications may be eligible for DePuy hip implant settlements.

DePuy ASR hip implants were recalled in August 2010, due to metal hip implant complications that patients reported. The FDA announced a voluntary recall of their DePuy ASR hip implants on Aug. 24, 2010, after reviewing data from the United Kingdom.

Approximately 93,000 DePuy ASR hip implants were recalled around the world, with 37,000 in the United States, after a United Kingdom joint registry found at least 13% of all patients who underwent hip implant surgery using DePuy ASR hip implants had to undergo revision surgery.

It is important to note that revision surgery is more complicated and is higher risk than the initial hip implant surgery. The agency decided to issue the recall after finding a significant number of patients had to undergo revision surgery, allegedly due to metal hip implant complications.

The agency also found that metal hip implant issues reported with the DePuy ASR hip implant complications were very similar to the injuries reportedly associated with the DePuy Pinnacle hip implants and other metal on metal hip implants.

DePuy ASR Hip Implant Complications

Patients had reported problems associated with metallosis, severe pain, and total device failure. Metal ions are reportedly shed into the bloodstream from the all metal hip implant ball and socket joint components interacting in any metal-on-metal hip implant.

Metallosis, or blood metal poisoning, occurs when metal ions in the blood become too elevated to very dangerous levels. This can cause a number of dangerous complications, including degenerative heart disease, endocrine disruption and organ failure.

Other complications reported by patients include the formation of noncancerous cysts around the implant site, severe and debilitating pain that prevents movements, and total device failure. Overall, if patients who received a DePuy ASR hip implant since March 2015 and experienced one of the following problems, they may be eligible for DePuy hip implant settlements:

  • Device failure that required the hip implant to be replaced
  • Cancer
  • Degenerative Heart Disease
  • Loss of bone density that can result in bones breaking or fracturing
  • Tissue death, primarily occurring around the implant site
  • Pseudotumors forming around the implant site
  • Cobalt poisoning
  • Metallosis

Johnson & Johnson is facing almost 8,000 metal hip implant lawsuits pertaining to the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System and the DePuy Pinnacle Acetebular Cup System.

However Johnson & Johnson is also paying attention to the DePuy hip implant settlements pertaining to the ASR, and has offered to compensate patients who had to undergo revision surgery due to metal hip complications since March 2015. Potential claimants should contact a specialized lawyer to determine eligibility for DePuy hip implant settlements.
