Many patients who had to undergo revision surgery allegedly due to defective DePuy ASR hip implants are seeking compensation through a DePuy ASR hip settlement. Recently the DePuy ASR hip settlement agreement has been extended to include new claimants who were not eligible under previous versions of the settlement.
According to the DePuy ASR hip settlement website, patients may qualify for compensation if they were injured and had to undergo revision surgery allegedly due to the ASR XL Acetabular Hip System or ASR Hip Resurfacing System. The DePuy ASR hip settlement was recently amended to include patients who underwent revision surgery after March 2015.
The DePuy ASR hip settlement website was designed to help patients and their lawyers determine eligibility, as well as to help DePuy Orthopaedics manage the settlement claims. Now with the DePuy ASR hip settlement extended, patients who had to receive revision surgery at a later time may now be eligible to receive compensation.
The previous DePuy ASR hip settlement was reached on March 2, 2015, in which it was decided patients who had to undergo revision survey between Aug. 31, 2014 and Jan. 31, 2015 were eligible for compensation. Each of these patients had opted to receive an ASR metal on metal hip implant, meant to help restore pelvic function.
Overview of DePuy ASR Hip Implant Complications
Metal on metal hip implants were very popular when first entering the market, as they were marketed as more durable and longer lasting than ceramic or plastic models.
They were advertised to better handle more vigorous movements like running, and most of them could be customized for each patient. This made metal on metal hip implants very popular among younger patients, as well as other patients wishing to live an active lifestyle.
However, not long after metal on metal hip implants entered the market, numerous injury reports were reported. Numerous patients who opted for DePuy ASR hip implants and other metal on metal hip implants have reported a number of complications including:
- Fretting
- Corrosion
- Debilitating Pain
- Limited Movement
- Infection
- Device Failure
- Metallosis (Blood Metal Poisoning)
- Formation of Pseudotumors
- Tissue Death
These metal hip implant complications are caused by the ball and socket components of the hip implant interacting and shedding metal ions into the blood. This causes the metal ion levels in the blood rise to dangerous levels, which itself leads to further complications.
Most patients who suffer metal hip implant complications have to undergo revision surgery to resolve them, which is considered riskier due to higher risk of infection. DePuy Orthopaedics had previously established a DePuy ASR hip settlement in November 2013 to compensate some of the first patients who had to undergo revision surgery allegedly due to ASR metal hip implants.
After the success of the first DePuy ASR hip settlement, other claimants were encouraged to come forward with their own claims. Each of these claims alleges the company either knew or should have known about the alleged defective nature of their metal hip implants.
Potential claimants should contact a lawyer to determine eligibility to participate in the DePuy ASR hip settlement or to file their own metal hip implant lawsuit.
