A hacker going by the alias “grep” is reportedly claiming they instigated a “minor” Dell data breach that the hacker says exposed more than 10,000 employee records.

Grep leaked the allegedly stolen data on the hacking forum Breach Forums last week, reports Hackread.com

Dell has reportedly not confirmed that it suffered a data breach, but informed Hackread.com that it is aware of and investigating the claims. Grep reportedly said the breach occurred earlier this month.

The information posted on Breach Forums includes full names, employee IDs, employee active statuses, employee DNOs and internal employee IDs, reports Hackread.com

The allegedly stolen data is broadly used as a unique identifier for an employee, to indicate if an employee is active, to represent a department number or other internal identifier and to serve as a unique internal identifier.

Allegedly stolen data reportedly contained two email addresses associated with Dell

The posted information reportedly only contained two email addresses associated with Dell and did not contain any plain text passwords nor personally identifiable information.

Despite this, the alleged data breach has gotten the attention of cybersecurity experts, including Stephen Kowski, Field CTO at SlashNext Email Security+, who told Hackread.com the exposed information could be used for nefarious means.

“While Dell has not yet confirmed the breach, the leaked information could be leveraged by threat actors for targeted phishing attempts or social engineering attacks, particularly given recent trends in cybercriminal tactics,” Kowski told Hackread.com.

In other recent data breach news, payment processing company Slim CD disclosed earlier this month that it suffered a data breach that affected nearly 1.7 million consumers.

Slim CD attributed the data breach to an unauthorized actor breaching an external system. The company said the incident occurred Aug. 17, 2023, and was discovered June 15, 2024.

Information exposed in the data breach included names, addresses, credit card numbers and card expiration dates, according to Slim CD.
