FreshRealm has recalled its chicken Alfredo products sold at Kroger and Walmart following a listeria outbreak that has affected at least 17 people across 13 states and resulted in three deaths, according to CDC reports.

The recall was announced after federal health officials linked the outbreak to heat-and-eat chicken fettuccine Alfredo meals produced before June 17 and sold in the refrigerated sections of retail stores.

The recalled products include 32.8oz trays of Marketside Grilled Chicken Alfredo and 12.3oz trays of Marketside Grilled Chicken Alfredo with Broccoli as well as 12.5oz trays of Home Chef Heat & Eat Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo. The best-by dates for these products range from June 19 to June 27.

According to the recall notice, a strain of listeria bacteria was found during a routine inspection in March, leading to the destruction of certain contaminated products before they reached stores. The source of the contamination has not yet been determined.

Listeria strain in recall linked to 2024 outbreak

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that the strain of listeria was first detected in individuals who fell ill on dates ranging from August 2024 – May 2025. The same outbreak strain was isolated from a routine chicken fettuccine alfredo sample collected by FSIS in a FreshRealm establishment in March 2025.

Tragically, the outbreak has claimed lives in Illinois, Michigan and Texas, with additional cases reported in states such as Florida, Indiana and North Carolina. “Officials are continuing to receive reports of illnesses linked to the product and are concerned that contamination is still occurring,” the CDC stated.

“Consumers should not eat the products, which may be in their refrigerators or freezers,” the recall advises.

FreshRealm has not yet identified the exact source of contamination, but the company is working closely with health officials to prevent further spread. “The number of sick people is probably higher than now known, and cases may be detected in additional states,” officials warned.

FreshRealm is taking steps to address the issue by recalling the affected products and cooperating with health authorities to investigate the source of contamination. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
