An Illinois woman recently filed an Eliquis lawsuit on behalf of her late father, alleging that the blood thinner medication caused internal bleeding that led to his death.
Oliver B. was prescribed Eliquis in order to treat his atrial fibrillation. However, from January 2014 until his death on June 12, 2014, Oliver allegedly suffered from severe Eliquis side effects, including major internal bleeding problems that ultimately led to his untimely death.
Oliver’s daughter Kathleen O. filed the wrongful death Eliquis lawsuit claiming that the use of Eliquis led directly to her father’s severe and ultimately fatal injuries, as well as medical expenses and emotional suffering.
According to the Eliquis lawsuit, Bristol-Myers Squibb knew about these Eliquis side effects and their dangers, yet failed to warn the public and the medical community about these risks.
The Eliquis lawsuit further alleges that Bristol-Myers Squibb continued to market Eliquis as safe and effective, despite knowledge to the contrary, and actively concealed their knowledge of its defects and dangers in the interest of company profit.
Kathleen filed this Eliquis lawsuit on multiple counts, including but not limited to defective design, failure to warn, negligence, fraudulent concealment, and wrongful death.
What is Eliquis?
Eliquis (apixaban) is a popular blood thinner drug, and belongs to a relatively new class of drugs known as Factor Xa Inhibitors. This class of blood thinners has begun replacing warfarin as the standard blood thinner medication across the country.
Unfortunately, Eliquis has been linked in a number of studies, complaints, and lawsuits to a series of serious Eliquis side effects, including internal bleeding complications.
In most cases, Eliquis side effects are mild and go away on their own. These side effects include nausea, easy bruising, and minor bleeding.
In other, rarer cases, Eliquis side effects may become extreme and even life-threatening. Internal bleeding is a common side effect in blood thinners, since these drugs stop blood clots from forming.
In most cases, blood clots are dangerous, but in situations such as a car accident or emergency surgery, blood clots are one of the body’s only defenses to avoid bleeding too much.
When a patient on a blood thinner is in an accident or emergency surgery, their body can no longer properly form these life-saving blood clots.
While warfarin and many of the older blood thinner medications come with antidotes to reverse these drugs’ effects, Eliqius does not yet have such an antidote. This means that in dangerous internal bleeding emergencies, Eliquis patients may be in much greater danger than those who took another kind of blood thinner drug.
Eliquis Lawsuits
A growing number of patients are filing Eliquis lawsuits, alleging that Bristol-Myers Squibb failed to adequately warn or even actively misled the public about the safety and efficacy of Eliquis.
Though filing an Eliquis lawsuit cannot undo the damage of Eliquis side effects like internal bleeding, or bring a loved one back to life, it may be able to help compensate for financial expenses incurred by medical bills or lost wages.
If you or someone you know has taken Eliquis or a similar medication and has since suffered from major Eliquis side effects like internal bleeding, you may be able to file an Eliquis lawsuit.
The Eliquis Lawsuit is Case No. 3:16-cv-00630, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois.
