woman-checking-blood-pressureDaiichi Sankyo is facing a growing multidistrict litigation (MDL) from numerous patients alleging they experienced Benicar intestinal problems. One of the most recent additions to this litigation comes from a Colorado couple claiming the wife had suffered serious Benicar intestinal problems.

Plaintiff couple Virginia R. and Michael R. are filing legal action against the Japanese pharmaceutical company and its partner Forest Laboratories, claiming the company failed to warn them against Benicar intestinal problems. According to their Benicar lawsuit, Virginia had been prescribed Benicar on July 30, 2017 to treat her hypertension and high blood pressure.

Overview of Benicar Intestinal Problems

Combined with diet and exercise, Benicar was supposed to help increase the longevity of Virginia’s life. However, not long after beginning her prescription, Virginia had allegedly began experiencing Benicar intestinal problems including:

  • Intestinal Malabsorption
  • Chronic Diarrhea
  • Rapid and Severe Weight Loss
  • Malnutrition
  • Nausea
  • Dehydration

In addition to these injuries, Virginia had reportedly also developed severe intestinal damage in the form of villous atrophy, and she had to be hospitalized.

Villout atrophy is a deterioration of the microscopic tentacles in the small intestine wall, causing problems for the patient in absorbing nutrients and inhibiting the digestive process. Villous atrophy ultimately interferes with absorbing the nutritional value from food, and it may cause chronic problems with malnutrition and dehydration.

Benicar intestinal problems were publicized in August 2012, when the Mayo Clinic had found 22 cases of Benicar patients suffering from celiac like symptoms. Each of these patients tested negative for celiac disease, leading to researchers suspecting the gastrointestinal complications were caused by Benicar.

These results were given to the FDA, in which the agency later released a warning regarding Benicar intestinal problems in July 2013. The agency stated Benicar may cause serious issues like sprue like enteropathy, chronic diarrhea, vomiting, and other similar symptoms.

The FDA further warned that Benicar could cause chronic gastrointestinal damage, and patients should discuss discounting the drug with their physician. Benicar intestinal problems have been reported by numerous patients, with a number of them opting to file legal action against Daiichi Sankyo.

These patients allege the pharmaceutical company failed to warn them against Benicar intestinal problems, and that the company did not include any language indicating these events on the drug’s warning label. In addition, Virginia and other patients reportedly used the medication for its intended purpose and did not deviate from prescription instructions.

Even with her diligence, Virginia still allegedly developed Benicar intestinal problems and has had to adjust to her chronic nutrition deficiencies. Virginia states that she would not have agreed to take the medication if she had known the potential Benicar intestinal problems.

Virginia and Michael are filing their Benicar lawsuit in MDL No. 2606, where it will stand alongside other claims alleging similar injuries. By joining an MDL, their Benicar lawsuit will be streamlined through the litigation process and will avoid conflicting rulings from different judges.

This Benicar Lawsuit is Case No. 1:17-cv-04802-RBK-JS, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, Camden Vicinage Division.
