Costco recall overview:

  • Who: Continental Dairy Facilities Southwest LLC is recalling more than 79,000 pounds of Costco butter.
  • Why: The butter’s labeling does not display a disclaimer about milk allergens.
  • Where: The recall is active in the United States.

Continental Dairy Facilities Southwest LLC has recalled more than 79,000 pounds of Costco butter as it fails to contain a disclaimer about milk allergens.

The recall was published to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration website on Nov. 7. It applies to 46,800 pounds Kirkland Signature Unsalted Sweet Cream Butter and 32,400 pounds of Kirkland Signature Salted Sweet Cream Butter.

According to the recall, the packaging of the products may not have an allergen disclaimer about milk on it.

The butter product packages do list cream, “but may be missing the Contains Milk statement,” the butter recall says.

Distribution of approximately 2,100 cases of butter occurred in Texas, it says.

For the Kirkland Signature salted sweet cream butter, the best-by dates were Feb. 23, 2025, for one of the lots and March 29, 2025, for the other, according to the FDA. Meanwhile, the four lots of unsalted butter had Feb. 22, Feb. 23, March 22 and March 23 best-by dates.

Each recalled package had four 4-ounce sticks within it.

Companies have to label food products that have milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans and sesame under the law.

FDA has labeled the butter recall with a “Class II” classification, which indicates a product “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

Meanwhile, the Acme Smoked Fish Corp. has recalled 111 cases of Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon as the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
