Like so many tricks of the cooking trade, old ideas are being revamped by new technology to become supposedly safer and more efficient.
As an example, the crock pot has been on the market since 1971 and is simply an appliance that took over the duties of cooking soups, stews, and roasts over several hours in an oven. Rather than leaving an oven unattended for hours, this simple, safe appliance is able to be left by the busy professional to cook while he or she is away.
Pressure cookers too have been modernized since its introduction in 1938, with some newer versions looking like advanced models of automated rice cookers. Unfortunately, the risk of a pressure cooker disaster has loomed with some models and overshadowed the technological advancement with serious injuries, pain, and suffering.
A class action lawsuit investigation has begun considering situations of pressure cooker disaster – where steam or boiling hot food spewed from the apparatus unexpectedly and despite safety mechanisms – causing severe burns and even shock.
There have been a couple of individual lawsuits over the last few years over pressure cookers that malfunctioned, causing pressure cooker disaster. These brands malfunctioned allegedly because of design flaws.
The pressure cooker brands that have been at the heart of three known lawsuits have been the Wolfgang Puck pressure cooker, Tristar pressure cooker, and Maxi-matic pressure cooker.
In June of this year, the Tristar pressure cooker has under scrutiny as a U.S. District Court federal judge in the State of Ohio upheld certification of a class action lawsuit with three plaintiffs injured by flying, ultra-heated food.
The Tristar pressure cooker appliance is standing accused of having certain manufacturing and design flaws that override the safety mechanism. These flaws allow the consumer to open the lid while there remains significant risk of pressure cooker disaster or explosion due to high heat and pressure.
Propelled food that had been highly heated was allegedly what injured the three current plaintiffs in this case.
Other brands of pressure cookers being investigated for probable flaws may include but not be limited by the following list:
- Cuisinart
- Crofton
- Aldi
How do Pressure Cookers Work and What are Some of the Modern Features?
Pressure cookers work much like the concept of a steam locomotive. But instead of burning coal to heat the water in a tank, we use the top of a stove or an internal heating mechanism of a modern pressure cooking appliance.
The heated water or sauce with food produces steam which is not allowed to escape, except in a very controlled manner. This causes the pressure inside the chamber to rise appreciably along with the heat, reducing cooking time considerably.
One of the more modern features of today’s appliance that is intended to prevent pressure cooker disaster is the safety lid lock. If the safety lid lock is working as it is intended without any flaw in the design, a user must press a button or wait for the pressure to subside and release before through a valve before they can open the lid.
