The popular antacid Pepcid is now available without a prescription, but consumers may not be aware that some Pepcid side effects are linked with a potentially dangerous autoimmune disorder that attacks mucus membranes.
The condition, known as Stevens Johnson Syndrome, begins as a rash on the extremities that appear to be small red dots, and during the winter the accompanying flu-like symptoms of chills and a fever can be misdiagnosed. However, if doctors fail to discover that the underlying condition is related to Stevens Johnson Syndrome, there can be significant skin damage, as well as lesions on the esophagus and even the potential for blindness.
Doctors used to prescribe Pepcid to reduce the likelihood of acid reflux as a prophylactic measure, sort of like daily asthma medications versus inhalers which are used for acute attacks. However, in the case of the antacid, there is a concern regarding Pepcid side effects and its mechanism of action. Medical research indicates that there are problems with bioavailability, meaning that the body only absorbs about 50 percent of the given dosage.
One solution for this has been to use different delivery mechanisms for administering Pepcid to patients. The two occasions most likely for Pepcid Stevens Johnson Syndrome to occur are when a course of treatment begins, and when the dosage increases. If patients who are trying to figure out how much of the antacid they need have to change their daily intake because of bioavailability concerns, it can lead to not just SJS side effects, but the more dangerous toxic epidermal necrolysis where entire sections of the skin die off.
