A Rhode Island man recently filed a Stryker V40 femoral head lawsuit against the medical device manufacturer, alleging its metal-on-metal hip system led to serious complications.
The man who filed the Stryker V40 femoral head lawsuit, plaintiff Ronald C., was implanted with a Stryker hip system during a left total hip replacement in January 2008. The specific device used was a Stryker Accolade system, which included a V40 femoral head component.
Unfortunately, Ronald alleges, he began experiencing a few major complications just a couple of years after the initial implantation. In February 2010, his left hip became painful, and he took medication to control the pain. A couple years later, in June 2012, the pain in his hip had worsened, and had even spread to the left part of his groin. By September, it was revealed that the system had loosened considerably. In 2013, the system dislocated three times, each time requiring emergency treatment.
Finally, in January 2014—only six years after the initial implantation of the supposedly permanent device—Ronald underwent revision surgery, removing the device. During this process, a number of problems were uncovered. His doctor reported finding inflamed tissue, cloudy fluid, and metallosis issues, according to the Stryker V40 femoral head lawsuit.
The Stryker V40 femoral head lawsuit was filed on July 7 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island.
Stryker Accolade Side Effects
Stryker Accolade V40 femoral head components have been linked with a variety of serious complications, including metallosis, a kind of metal poisoning.
Metallosis problems are often linked with metal-on-metal hip implants. While metal-on-metal hip implants are a popular option, these kinds of hip implants actually allow metal components to rub together. Over time, this may release excessive amounts of metals like cobalt and chromium into the bloodstream and surrounding tissue, which can lead to serious and even permanent problems.
On top of the risk of metallosis, Stryker LFIT femoral heads have also been connected with an increased risk of dislocation or dissociation.
Patients claim to have suffered from a number of serious and sometimes permanent injuries including the following:
- Hip implant failure
- Serious physical pain
- Emotional and mental distress
- Medical and surgical expenses
- Loss of enjoyment of life
In many cases, patients who have suffered from serious hip implant complications have been forced to undergo revision surgery to help alleviate these problems. Of course, any additional surgery adds yet more risk and expense for a patient.
