Comcast service maintenance plan

Some disappointed Comcast customers have claimed that the company deceptively advertised its Comcast Wire Maintenance Plan.

According to these customers, the plan was advertised as covering repairs for inside wiring, service call charges, and other services at no additional cost.

The mega company advertised this plan as “comprehensive,” including all of these inside wiring services.

However, customers claim, the Comcast plan was not nearly so “comprehensive” as the company claimed. Instead, the plan did not actually include any such protection for the wiring inside the walls of a customer’s home—which is, of course, what the phrase “inside wiring” might imply to a good portion of consumers.

Comcast does note, deep in its terms and conditions, that the maintenance plan does not cover repairing wires inside of a wall.

Comcast Wire Maintenance Plan Basics

The company advertised and marketed its Service Maintenance Plan as a method for customers to avoid paying for all of their service calls.

Customers are first introduced to this plan when the sign up for Comcast services, and are asked to also opt in to the Comcast wire maintenance plan for $4.99 per month.

On its website from at least January 2011 through mid-June 2016, Comcast described its Service Protection Plan as providing the following:

  • Unlimited covered service calls with no contracts
  • Troubleshooting and diagnosis of XFINITY TV, XFINITY Voice, XFINITY Internet and XFINITY Home service problems.
  • Hassle-free replacement and repair of defective customer inside wiring.
  • Hassle-free replacement and repair of cable jumpers, cable connectors, splitters and phone jacks due to normal wear and tear.
  • Service calls due to customer education or customer owned equipment connected to your XFINITY services.
  • Confidence that if there is a problem with any XFINITY service, Comcast will take care of it without charging a service fee.

According to customers, this is not the only time Comcast promised “inside wiring” services. Indeed, customers claim that Comcast sales representatives also promised these kinds of services both over the phone and via email.

However, the Comcast plan fine print does note that “inside wiring” is defined as “wiring within the point just on your side of the terminating equipment or box located at or about twelve (12) inches outside of your unit or residence and extending to the individual phone jacks and cable and internet outlets and extensions in your home.”

The fine print further notes that “The Plan does not cover the repair of wire concealed within a wall (i.e. wire that is wall fished).”

Comcast Wire Maintenance Plan Lawsuit

Although Comcast did define what “inside wiring” means in its fine print, some customers claim that this was not enough to negate its allegedly deceptive marketing tactics.

Washington’s Attorney General, Robert Ferguson, filed a Comcast wire maintenance plan lawsuit against Comcast on Aug. 1. The lawsuit alleges that Comcast used deceptive and fraudulent practices when advertising and selling these plans to customers.

According to Ferguson, Comcast defrauded customers in Washington alone of at least $73 million during the five years this plan was active.

If you have purchased the Comcast Service Protection Plan and expected that it would cover wiring repairs or service calls that it did not actually cover, you may be able to join a lawsuit.
