A Colorado woman has filed a Beyaz lawsuit against Bayer Pharmaceuticals over blood clot injuries she allegedly suffered from taking the birth control pills.
Plaintiff Angel Keeling says she started experiencing a significant pain in her abdomen soon after starting the medication. She was first prescribed that drug in January 2012 after hearing of its additional benefits of being a vitamin B supplement. Beyaz has the same basic medication as Yaz but has the additional vitamin. Yaz has been the target of numerous Yaz class action lawsuits over blood clot injuries that have led to heart attack, stroke, and pulmonary embolism.
Several months after starting Beyaz, she allegedly developed deep vein thrombosis, a Beyaz side effect. The drug had been prescribed to relieve her symptoms of monthly menstrual cramping, prevent pregnancy, and give a dose of daily vitamin B. Instead, her Beyaz lawsuit says, she suffered from severe physical injuries that required hospitalization and led to costly medical bills.
In her Beyaz lawsuit, Keeling alleges she was not aware of the risk of blood clot injuries and other Beyaz side effects, and if she had been aware of the risks, she would not have taken the medication.
Overview of Beyaz Complications
Beyaz is one of the newer birth control products made by Bayer Pharmaceuticals, adding vitamin supplementation to the regular formula. Beyaz is a part of Bayer’s combination oral contraceptive (COC) family, along with Yasmin, Yaz, and Ocella. COC pills are birth control pills that contain both an estrogen and progestin component, a combination intended to best prevent pregnancy. Beyaz and its relatives are famously known for containing a newly-synthesized hormone, drospirenone, which had not been used in any birth control pill until Yasmin in 2001.
After Yasmin was released to the American market, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration began receiving reports of Yasmin blood clot injuries. After investigation, it became apparent that Bayer did not fully understand how drospirenone worked, and that limited pre-clinical data had been collected. Medical experts believe that drospirenone is not yet fully understood, and the side effects are still unknown.
A known side effect of drospirenone is that it is a diuretic, which causes the potassium levels in the blood to rise and slows blood flow. This allows for the possibility of blood clot formation, which could lead to deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.
Keeling’s Beyaz lawsuit was filed as part of Yaz multidistrict litigation titled in Re: Yasmin and Yaz (Drospirenone) Marketing, Sales Practices and Relevant Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2100, in the U.S. District Court of Southern Illinois.
