Novartis, manufacturer of the medication Tasigna which is taken to treat chronic myeloid leukemia, is under fire for allegedly failing to warn consumers about potential risks of severe circulatory side effects.
The pharmaceutical company is the target for several different plaintiffs that have pursued a Tasigna lawsuit to claim damages for injuries or death related to atherosclerosis.
Several studies are presented in each Tasigna lawsuit filed against Novartis which demonstrate a connection between the chemotherapy treatment and subsequent development of blood clots and narrowing of the arteries of the body due to buildup of plaque—a condition known as atherosclerosis.
According to each Tasigna lawsuit, atherosclerosis occurs when plaque builds up in the arterial circulatory system which slows down blood flow to the brain and spinal cord, which in turn can affect the function of almost every other organ system in the body.
Additionally, oxygenated blood delivery to the extremities is reduced and this reduction can result in the need for amputation if severe enough.
The arterial plaque that builds up in cases of atherosclerosis can become a clot that when traveling systemically can cause tissue death, cardiac or respiratory arrest, or—if it reaches the carotid arteries—stroke. All of these adverse medical events can end with the demise of the patient.
Novartis stands accused in the Tasigna lawsuit of prior awareness of these risks and circulatory side effects which the company failed to add to the label in a timely fashion.
Allegedly, the pharmaceutical company concurrently advertised the leukemia drug as superior in its class in an aggressive campaign. This campaign brought many cancer sufferers on board, relying upon the stated claims. Tasigna was noted as having global sales in the year 2016 exceeding $1.7 billion.
Tasigna History
Tasigna—known generically as nilotinib—was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2007 as a chemotherapy drug specifically geared for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML).
CML is a blood cancer that is disproportionately diagnosed in an older adult population in individuals at least 40-years-old. It is caused from a genetic mutation and the etiology is unknown.
Symptoms of this rare form of cancer include fatigue, inexplicable weight loss, a pale appearance, and breaking into a sweat—usually at night. It starts in the bone marrow of the blood and progresses slowly over time.
In addition to Tasigna, there are other targeted drugs available to treat leukemia, as well as stem cell transplant, biological therapy, and chemotherapy.
