Sprouts sunflower butter class action overview:

  • Who: Two plaintiffs, Caryn Hart and Amanda Glover, filed a class action lawsuit against Sprouts Farmers Market Inc.
  • Why: Hart and Glover claim Sprouts failed to disclose that its sunflower butter products contain unsafe and unlawful levels of the carcinogen cadmium.
  • Where: The Sprouts sunflower butter class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.

A new nationwide class action lawsuit alleges Sprouts Farmers Market misled consumers about the health benefits and quality of its sunflower butter products.

Plaintiffs Caryn Hart and Amanda Glover filed the Sprouts sunflower butter class action lawsuit against the supermarket chain on April 2 in California federal court. They claim Sprouts’ actions violate state and federal consumer laws.

According to the class action lawsuit, Sprouts Farmers Market sells a line of sunflower butter products marketed as safe for children when, in actual fact, the products contain unsafe levels of cadmium, a known carcinogen.

The plaintiffs claim that Sprouts failed to disclose the presence of cadmium on the product labels. California law requires a warning label for products that contain more than 4.1 micrograms of cadmium per serving.

Sprouts’ sunflower butter products contain up to 26.56 micrograms of cadmium per serving, the lawsuit claims.

Sprouts also misrepresented protein content of sunflower butter products, lawsuit claims

The class action lawsuit also alleges that Sprouts misrepresented the protein content of its sunflower butter products by failing to include the daily value (DV) percentage for protein on the label.

The plaintiffs argue that Sprouts’ products provide significantly less bio-usable protein than advertised because sunflower seeds have a low protein quality score.

As a result, the lawsuit claims that consumers paid a premium price for Sprouts’ sunflower butter products, believing them to be healthier and more nutritious than they actually are.

The plaintiffs are looking to represent anyone in the United States who bought the Sprouts sunflower butter products.

They’re suing for violations of California consumer laws and for breach of warranty, and are seeking certification of the Sprouts sunflower butter class action lawsuit, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial.

Recently, Abbott Laboratories was slapped with a similar class action over its Similac infant formula alleged to contain metals such as arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury.
