A new class action lawsuit alleges On shoes make an embarrassing squeaking noise when worn, which the company allegedly refuses to cover under its warranty.
Plaintiffs Louis Bologna and Patricia Ramirez filed the class action complaint against On Inc. on Oct. 9 in Oregon federal court, alleging violations of state and federal consumer laws.
The complaint claims that On’s shoes, which feature the company’s signature CloudTec technology, emit a loud and persistent squeaking sound with each step, causing embarrassment for wearers.
Bologna and Ramirez argue that the defect is due to the CloudTec technology used in the outsole of On Inc.’s shoes, which is intended to provide cushioned support when wearers land.
Bologna and Ramirez allege that On has been aware of the issue but has failed to address it, leaving consumers to resort to DIY solutions or stop wearing the shoes altogether.
“Though seemingly inconsequential, according to upset consumers publishing their experience, Defendant has refused to cover this defect—which it has been on notice of—under its warranty,” the On Cloud class action lawsuit says.
Bologna and Ramirez want to represent California and New York classes of consumers who purchased On Inc.’s athletic shoes with CloudTec technology during the class period.
On Cloud shoes with defect retail for as much as $180, class action claims
On’s CloudTec technology is designed to provide cushioned support with hexagonal, octagonal and oval-shaped holes on the outsole, the class action lawsuit says. However, the plaintiffs allege that the friction within these holes causes the squeaking noise, which is amplified by moisture trapped under the insole.
Despite the defect, On shoes retail for between $140 and $180, above the national average for running shoes, Bologna and Ramirez say.
The plaintiffs argue that no reasonable consumer would pay such a high price for shoes that require DIY modifications to be wearable.
The class action lawsuit alleges On has refused to cover the defect under its warranty, which does not extend to “normal wear and tear.”
The plaintiffs claim On Inc. is guilty of violating California’s Unfair Competition Law and Consumers Legal Remedies Act and New York General Business Law.
Bologna and Ramirez demand a jury trial and request declaratory and injunctive relief and an award of compensatory, statutory and punitive damages for themselves and all class members.
Early this year, popular shoe maker Crocs was hit with a lawsuit claiming it falsely advertised regular prices and corresponding phantom discounts on products sold through its website.

Both my husband and I have several pairs they all squeak
I bought some of these for work and Everytime I wear them, they squeak. I thought it were just mine until I saw this.
The company did admit there was an issue, and offered an easy DIY solution, which took about five minutes and totally eliminated the squeak.
I had to stop wearing mine because my boyfriend would make fun of the ‘squeaking’ every time I had them on. Please add me.
That is the reason I don’t wear my On Clouds anymore. They are just too loud!
As me, and my multiple pairs of squeaky shoes
I have a pair that squeak and was told there was nothing to do other than find alternative ways to try to stop it. I will not purchase anymore ON shoes because of this issue. It does seem to be most of their shoes squeak. Shame on them, these shoes are not cheap.
I own several pairs of ON shoes. The eclipse is my favorite to run in and I have worn out 2 pairs and have 2 pairs now I keep in rotation. I also have 3 pairs that I wear out almost daily. My eclipse pairs squeak so loudly I can hear them through my AirPods. When I wore through the treads of my older ones, I wore them out just a couple of times because I was so embarrassed by the by the sound!
This is to funny, I bought my sneakers at Bloomingdale. After a couple of uses I noticed the squeak, but I ignored it. Finally I just donated them.
