A new class action lawsuit claims Amazon falsely advertised its Amazon Basics paper products as sustainable.
Four plaintiffs filed a class action complaint against Amazon.com Inc. on March 14 in Washington federal court, alleging violations of state consumer laws.
According to the Amazon class action lawsuit, the company has been “greenwashing” its Amazon Basics paper products by falsely advertising them as environmentally friendly and sustainable.
The plaintiffs allege that Amazon prominently displays a “Sustainability Leaf,” a “Climate Pledge Friendly” badge and the “FSC” logo on its Amazon Basics paper products, which include toilet paper and paper towels.
These labels are intended to indicate that the products are made from responsibly sourced materials and have a lower carbon footprint than other products, the plaintiffs say.
However, the plaintiffs claim that Amazon’s paper products are actually made from wood pulp sourced from clear-cutting and burning of Canada’s boreal forest, one of the last primary forests left in the world.
Amazon’s paper products harm environment, lawsuit alleges
The Amazon ‘greenwashing’ class action alleges that Amazon’s suppliers are systematically destroying old-growth forests that are essential to carbon neutralization and wildlife rehabilitation efforts.
The plaintiffs say Amazon’s paper products contribute to the release of 26 million metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year, equivalent to the annual emissions of 5.5 million passenger cars.
The case alleges that Amazon’s environmental claims violate the Federal Trade Commission’s Green Guides, which guide how to avoid making false or misleading environmental marketing claims.
The plaintiffs are looking to represent anyone who purchased Amazon Basics paper products in certain states from January 25, 2020, through the present. They’re suing for fraudulent concealment and violations of state consumer laws and are seeking certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial.
In other Amazon news, the company is accused of allegedly using software embedded in mobile devices to covertly harvest location data and personal information on millions of Americans.
