Citizens of Humanity, a popular clothing company, has recently come under fire for allegedly falsely labeling its jeans as “Made in America” and “Made in the USA” when the company’s products allegedly contain foreign-made materials.
The high end jeans company sells its Citizens of Humanity jeans in various upscale retailers, including Bloomingdale’s, Sak’s Fifth Avenue, Revolve Clothing, Macy’s, Anthropologie, Barneys New York, Neiman Marcus, and others, totaling to over 1,300 retailers globally.
Each pair of supposedly American-made Citizens of Humanity jeans retail for about $150. They are advertised as hand-crafted, made in small batches, and tend to bear a Made in the USA logo.
Why is Made in the USA More Expensive?
Products that are made in America or have a Made in USA logo tend to sell at higher price points because they are marketed as being made from higher quality materials than foreign-made products.
Consumers are also generally willing to pay more for American made products because of the assumption that by doing so they are supporting the U.S. economy and the American job market.
The Federal Trade Commission has strict requirements about what can be labeled as Made in the USA, and some companies like Citizens of Humanity allegedly push the envelope by putting a Made in America logo or sticker on products that are either made in foreign countries or made with components manufactured in other countries.
Citizens of Humanity Made in America Logo Claims
According to consumer allegations, the fabric, thread, buttons, rivets, and some zipper assembly subcomponents used to make Citizens of Humanity jeans are not made in the U.S. and are allegedly made in other countries like China and Taiwan.
While state laws differ, California has some of the strictest requirements for allowing a product to bear an American Made or Made in the USA label.
Consumers who feel they have been duped by buying allegedly American-made Citizens of Humanity jeans online or from a retail store in the state of California may be eligible to file a Citizens of Humanity lawsuit or join a Citizens of Humanity class action lawsuit.
These cases may allow consumers to receive compensation from the manufacturer for the alleged deception that tricked them into paying a premium for an item that is not truly Made in America.
