Takata airbag recall hands on steering wheelMore than 34 million vehicles have been part of the Takata airbag recall that was initiated several years ago. These recalls were issued for the front airbags of vehicles that could injure the front passenger or driver, sometimes even fatally.

Chrysler 300 recalls have affected vehicle owners from these vehicles made in model years 2010 through 2015. Other Chrysler recalls include the 2006-2008 Crossfire and the 2007-2009 Aspen, with the most vehicles being affected under the Chrysler 300 recalls.

The airbag issues at the center of the Chrysler 300 recalls center on the airbag inflator. The airbag inflator in the airbags is made of a metal cartridge that is filled with propellant. Upon impact, the propellant is released and causes the airbag to rapidly inflate.

Due to an alleged defect in the inflator, the propellant can discharge with enough force to make the metal cartridge explode, and metal shrapnel may perforate the airbag and enter the vehicle where it can essentially impale vehicle occupants. The amount of force the propellant needs to properly inflate the airbag is essentially overshot in these airbags that inflate with too much force behind them.

The propellant that inflates the Takata airbags is ammonium nitrate, which also happens to be a chemical that is used to make bombs explode. This chemical has reportedly made the airbags explode in a way that should not have been possible when trying to ensure passenger safety in a crash.

One issue that has been mentioned with regard to the force that the Takata airbags operate with is the lack of a proper drying agent. Apparently, if an appropriate amount of drying agent was available, the airbags would experience a more “controlled” force that would allow them to function in their intended manner.

Compounding on top of the issues of a forceful propellant and lack of a drying agent is the environment in which the vehicles may be driven. High humidity and heat, especially if combined, affect the way the propellant performs and could make matters worse.

With respect to its Chrysler 300 recalls, FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) has been under scrutiny for its allegedly delayed action in recalling the vehicles. According to various reports, problems with the Takata airbags were known as far back as 2004, yet vehicle manufacturers held off on issuing recalls and continued to make vehicles in the meantime, potentially putting millions more lives in danger.

Because of this apparent delayed reaction to issuing Chrysler 300 recalls, vehicle owners have felt that the manufacturer failed by neglecting to inform owners of the airbag problems. A number of vehicle owners have taken matters into their own hands and have decided to take legal action against FCA over these delayed Chrysler 300 recalls, in hopes to hold the company accountable for their apparent failure to issue proper warnings and the problems associated with the recalls.
