Cabot Creamery has issued a recall for 1,700 pounds of its butter after finished product testing revealed the presence of Coliform bacteria, indicating possible fecal contamination.

Agri-Mark Inc., Cabot Creamery’s parent company, initiated the recall for the brand’s 8-ounce Extra Creamy Premium Sea Salted Butter after finished product testing revealed potential contamination.

The recall was announced on March 26 and affects products distributed in seven states, including Vermont and New York. The affected butter is packaged in cardboard containers containing two 4-ounce sticks, with a best-by date of Sept. 9, 2025. The products also bear the lot number 090925-055 and UPC 0 78354 62038 0.

Agri-Mark says it has successfully recovered 99.5% of the product before it reached consumers, with only 17 packages sold at retail in Vermont.

According to the FDA, the recall is categorized as Class III, indicating that the use of the product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences.

Agri-Mart has urged consumers to check any package details and to contact the company if they have any concerns.

Although most coliforms do not cause illness, their presence indicates potential lapses in hygiene during production, news sources say.

“Coliform is a generic term for Gram-negative bacteria that are frequently found in the intestine,” Dr. Elaine Cloutman-Green told Newsweek. “Finding them would often suggest recent fecal contamination at some point along the production pipeline”

Coliform bacteria in food products is a concern as it may indicate the presence of more harmful pathogens like E. coli and Salmonella, which are significant causes of foodborne illnesses in the United States, with symptoms ranging from severe stomach cramps to fever and diarrhea.

Agri-Mart can be contacted directly via Email at [email protected] or by calling  1-888-792-2268 (Monday to Friday, 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM EST)

Agri-Mark stated that no other products are affected by this recall, and it has not received any reports of illness or injury related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
