Bugaboo class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: A consumer filed a class action lawsuit against Bugaboo North America Inc.
  • Why: The plaintiff claims Bugaboo highchairs have a defect that poses a serious risk of injury to children.
  • Where: The Bugaboo class action lawsuit was filed in New York federal court.

A Bugaboo class action lawsuit claims the company sold highchairs with a defect that poses a serious risk of injury to children.

Plaintiff Ryan Sturtz claims the screws securing the front legs of Bugaboo Giraffe highchairs can loosen or fall out, allowing the front legs to detach from the rest of the chair.

“The Defect manifests most often when a child is seated in the highchair with their feet on the footrest,” the Bugaboo class action states. “When the child pushes on the footrest, the front legs dislodge from the rest of the highchair, causing the highchair to fall forward while pivoting on the back legs.”

Sturtz wants to represent a nationwide class of consumers who bought a Bugaboo Giraffe highchair as well as a Pennsylvania subclass.

Bugaboo blamed customers in highchair recall, class action claims

Bugaboo issued a recall for the highchairs in June after receiving 22 reports of the legs detaching, including 13 reports of minor injuries, the Bugaboo class action states.

The recall affects about 18,280 highchairs that were sold from May 2023 through April 2025. Consumers who bought the highchairs were instructed to stop using them and contact Bugaboo for a free repair kit with an Allen key and new screws to install into the product’s legs.

Sturtz claims Bugaboo’s recall notice placed the blame for the defect on consumers, saying the legs could detach if the screws were not fully tightened during setup.

Sturtz argues Bugaboo marketed the highchairs as safe and reliable products and did not warn consumers about the defect. He claims Bugaboo is guilty of negligence and unjust enrichment.

Sturtz demands a jury trial and requests declaratory and injunctive relief and an award of compensatory, incidental, consequential and punitive damages for himself and all class members.

In July, child car seat maker Nuna faced another class action after plaintiffs alleged a recall remedy kit and cleaning instructions for defective seats were ineffective.
