Johnson Health Tech Trading is recalling more than 3.8 million BowFlex 552 and 1090 Adjustable Dumbbells due to potential safety hazards.

The BowFlex recall affects units sold in the United States, with reports indicating that the weight plates may detach during use, posing a risk of injury.

The recall, announced June 5, includes dumbbells sold from April 23, 2024, through May 2025 by Johnson Health Tech Trading, as well as those sold by BowFlex, Inc. (formerly Nautilus, Inc.) prior to April 23, 2024.

These adjustable dumbbells, available in weights ranging from 5 to 52.5 pounds for the 552 model and 10 to 90 pounds for the 1090 model, are identified by specific model and serial numbers listed on the US Consumer Product Safety Commission website.

Nautilus reports include over 100 injuries, recall says

Johnson Health Tech Trading has received 12 incident reports with no injuries, while Nautilus reported 337 incidents, resulting in 111 injuries, including concussions and broken toes.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled Bowflex adjustable dumbbells and contact Johnson Health Tech Trading for a refund of the purchase price in the form of a voucher, or a replacement for units sold by Johnson Health Tech Trading, according to the recall notice.

For units sold by BowFlex Inc. (formerly Nautilus Inc.), consumers can request a refund in the form of a prorated voucher and a one-year JRNY digital fitness membership. Consumers will be sent a pre-paid shipping label to return the handle and base for each returned dumbbell. Johnson Health Tech Trading is contacting all known purchasers directly.

For further information, consumers can contact Johnson Health Tech Trading by telephone at 800-209-3539 or via email at r[email protected].

Earlier this year, Johnson Health Tech America was slapped with a lawsuit after a customer claimed the solution for 12,000 recalled Matrix indoor cycles was insufficient. The company is not currently facing legal action over the BlowFlex recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

NOTE the “replacement/refund” is just a prorated amount if you have older dumbbells. Mine are from 2020 and have never given me an issue…yet. But I’m sure as heck not going to send back my base and handle to only get $60 back in “bowflex” money. Booo!

  7. K.Johnson says:

I purchased mine second-hand. Do I need to take any specific steps compared to the original buyers in order to make a claim? I definitely want to avoid any issues, especially since the workout area in our house is on the second floor!
