BMW of North America recently issued three recalls. A consumer also hit the automaker with a class action lawsuit.ย
The recalls involve starter motors, cargo rails and Takata-brand airbag inflators. The class action lawsuit argues BMW sold vehicles with leaky roofs.
BMW recalls 105,000+ vehicles over concerns starter motor could overheat
BMW issued a recall for more than 105,000 vehicles earlier this month over concerns their starter motors could overheat, creating a fire risk.ย
โA starter motor that overheats can ignite nearby combustible material in the engine compartment, increasing the risk of a fire,โ BMW says in a recall acknowledgement letter.ย
The recall involves certain BMW model year 2019-2020 X5, X7, 2020 3 Series Sedan, X6, 2020-2021 7 Series Sedan, 2020 8 Series Convertible, 8 Series Coupe and 2020 8 Series Gran Coupe vehicles.
BMW says it is remedying the issue via a software update that will prevent the engine starters on the recalled vehicles from electrically overloading, according to the recall.ย
BMW recalls 291,000+ vehicles over cargo rail detachment concernsย
BMW issued a recall for more than 291,000 vehicles last month over concerns their cargo rail could detach during a rear crash.ย
The recall involves model year 2018-2023 BMW X3 sDrive30i, X3 xDrive30i, X3 M40i and X3 M vehicles.
In the recall notice, BMW attributed the recall to faulty bolts. It says dealers will replace the bolts at no cost to vehicle owners.ย
BMW recalls 394,000+ sedans, sportswagons equipped with Takata airbag inflators
BMW issued a recall for more than 394,000 of its 3 Series sedans and sportswagons last month over concerns they were equipped with potentially-deadly Takata-brand airbag inflators.ย
The recall involves model year 2006-2011 BMW 3 Series Sedan (324i, 325i, 325xi, 328i, 328xi, 330i, 330xi, 335i, 335xi), 2006-2012 3 Series Sportswagon (325xi, 328i, 328xi) and 2009-2011 3 Series Sedan (335d) vehicles.ย
In the recall notice, the automaker says it is concerned the Takata airbag inflators in the recalled vehicles could explode, potentially causing vehicle occupants to suffer a fatal injury.ย
โIn the event of an inflator rupture, metal fragments could pass through the air bag cushion material, which may result in injury or death to vehicle occupants,โ the BMW recall says.ย
BMW is one of a number of automakers to issue a recall due to Takata airbags. The devices are allegedly to blame for at least 10 deaths and more than 100 injuries around the globe.ย
Class action claims BMW sold vehicles with leaky roofs
A consumer filed a class action lawsuit against BMW in June over claims the automaker sold vehicles with a defect that allowed water to enter through their roofs and caused dangerous issues.ย
The class action lawsuit argues the alleged defect allowed water to enter the recalled vehicles through the roofs, causing damage to the vehiclesโ electrical components.ย
โThe defect poses a danger to drivers and occupants of the class vehicles, and others who share the road with them, as water infiltration could result in the failure of vital safety equipment,โ the BMW class action says.ย
BMW vehicles included in the class action lawsuit include model year 2017-2023 BMW M440i, M550i, X1, X3, X4, X5, X6, and X7, 330, 340i and 750i vehicles.
