More and more birth control patients implanted with Essure devices are reporting suffering from severe Essure problems, including bleeding, organ perforation, pain, and ectopic pregnancy, among others. Some have chosen to file lawsuits against the device’s manufacturer, Bayer Healthcare, alleging that they were inadequately warned about the Essure problems they might face because of the device.
Background of Essure
Essure is a popular birth control option that has become hugely popular since its FDA approval in 2002—indeed, around 750,000 people have so far been implanted with the Essure device. Upon its release, Essure was considered a breakthrough contraceptive option, as a permanent birth control option that did not require the surgery necessary for tubal ligation.
The design of the Essure system is fairly basic: two metal coils, lined with a thin fabric, are placed within the patient’s fallopian tubes. The procedure is quick and noninvasive, requiring no incision or anesthesia at all, and is often done in a doctor’s office.
After Essure is implanted, it takes a few months to become fully effective. The time is required so that the coils can expand into the surrounding tissue, and for the tissue to grow in around the coils in turn. This is intended to completely block the fallopian tubes, effectively preventing pregnancy.
Bayer Healthcare markets the device as a safe and effective form of birth control, but lawsuits allege that there are serious Essure problems linked with the device—risks that patients and doctors may not be aware of before implantation.
Essure Problems
Side effects should be expected from any medication or medical device; however, many patients who were implanted with Essure claim that these Essure problems are far more severe than expected. Thousands of women have reported serious Essure adverse effects since the device’s approval. The FDA has received over 5,000 reports of Essure adverse effects.
Common Essure problems reported include issues like headaches, dizziness, vomiting, cramps, abdominal or back pain, fatigue, weight fluctuation, and pain during sex. The birth control device has also been linked with some far more serious Essure problems, that can cause lasting or permanent damage.
Major Essure problems include implant failure, device migration, organ perforation, device fracture, and ectopic pregnancy. Patients who suffer from these kinds of Essure problems may require removal surgery, but removal surgery carries its own risks.
Filing a Lawsuit Over Essure Problems
According to Essure lawsuits, Bayer Healthcare failed to adequately warn patients and the medical community about major Essure problems, and instead chose to actively withhold this valuable information. Plaintiffs allege that, had they been adequately informed of these major Essure problems, they would never have been implanted with an Essure birth control device.
If you or someone you love has suffered from any of these minor or major Essure problems, you may be able to file an Essure lawsuit against Bayer. While filing a lawsuit cannot take away the pain and suffering caused by Essure problems, it can help to compensate for the financial cost of medical expenses and lost wages.
In general, Essure lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
