Certain birth control methods have been linked to a serious neurological condition known as pseudotumor cerebri.
Product liability lawyers are searching for potential plaintiffs to bring pseudotumor cerebri lawsuits against various birth control medication manufacturers.
These pharmaceutical companies allegedly failed to warn about dangerous side effects associated with taking the medication.
Birth control medications that have been linked to pseudotumor cerebri include Yas, Yasmin, Ocella, Mirena IUD, Ortho Evra, ParaGard, and Implanon, and Nexplanon.
Implanon is a type of birth control that is implanted under the skin of a woman’s arm. The medical device is a thin flexible plastic rod, about the size of a matchstick.
Implanon releases a continuous dose of etonogestrel into the body. It continues to be effective for up to three years after implantation.
Unlike many birth control methods, Implanon does not contain estrogen. Nexplanon shares many similarities with Implanon.
Like Implanon, Nexplanon is an implant form of birth control but with two major differences. The Nexplanon implant is radiopaque.
Radiopaque objects block radiation rather than allow the radiation to pass through it, making the object easy to identify during x-rays, ultrasound scanning, and magnetic resource imaging.
This makes it easier for health care providers to locate the birth control device, so that they can ensure that the device is in its proper place. The process of inserting the device is also different from the method used for Implanon.
Recent studies have shown that various types of birth control including Implanon and Nexplanon can cause an abnormal increase in cerebrospinal fluid in the brain, or pseudotumor cerebri.
Pseudotumor cerebri symptoms include headache, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, migraines, neck stiffness, ringing in the ears, forgetfulness, and depression.
In many cases, symptoms may mimic other medical conditions, which increases the risk for initial misdiagnosis. In order to diagnose pseudotumor cerebri, a medical professional may request that the patient have an MRI, a CT exam, a spinal tap, or an eye exam.
Several pseudotumor cerebri lawsuits have been filed in the United States. These lawsuits allege that the birth control manufacturers violated consumer protections laws by failing to share the risk of developing pseudotumor cerebri with consumers.
Awards and settlements from the lawsuits will help victims pay medical bills as well as compensate victims for the pain and suffering.
Victims who have suffered from birth control-caused pseudotumor cerebri may wish to seek the advice of a legal professional for assistance in deciding whether to bring a lawsuit.
Birth control lawsuits filed against major pharmaceutical companies for violating consumer protection laws help hold these companies accountable for their actions and remind them that they owe their consumers a specific duty of care.
