Biomet Inc. is facing a new hip replacement surgery lawsuit from a Pennsylvania woman, who alleges major injuries from the company’s M2a Magnum metal on metal hip replacement.
After undergoing hip replacement surgery in January 2008, Plaintiff Sandra S. reportedly developed metal poisoning and other debilitating effects.
One of the injuries she alleges was that Biomet’s M2a Magnum device led to hip implant metal poisoning, also known as metallosis – a condition where the metal ions from the device cause blood poisoning in the body.
The metal on metal hip replacement lawsuit states that all metal hip implants are often composed of a chromium alloy, which is advertised to be longer lasting than ceramic or plastic and is better suited for more strenuous activities like running. In addition, most metal on metal hip replacements can be custom fit to patients.
Like many patients who undergo this procedure, Sandra had chosen to use a metal on metal hip replacement for its advertised longevity and durability.
After undergoing the hip replacement surgery, Sandra was reasonably expecting her life to be relativity uninterrupted and to have full range of motion. Instead, according to her metal on metal hip replacement lawsuit, Sandra suffered debilitating pain, discomfort, soreness, dysfunction, loss of motion, and hip implant metal poisoning.
In order to correct these injuries, Sandra underwent two revision hip replacement surgeries on June 23, 2014 and Dec. 22, 2014 to replace the failed metal on metal hip replacement. It is important to note that these revision surgeries carry greater risks and are more complicated, than the initial hip replacement surgery.
At no point before or after the hip replacement surgery, did Biomet warn Sandra of the possibility of hip implant metal poisoning or other implant complications.
Complications of Hip Replacement Surgery
According to medical experts, the complications associated with metal on metal hip replacements stem from the ball and socket joints of the device. When these metal on metal hip implant components interact, metal ions are shed into the blood stream and can cause the metal levels to rise to dangerous levels.
In addition, hip implant metal poisoning patients are also at risk for infection, the formation of pseudotumors, and complete device failure.
Even though these complications are now well documented, a number of patients were not informed of them before choosing an all metal hip implant and then undergoing hip replacement surgery.
As a result, Sandra and a number of other patients who suffered similar injuries have opted to pursue legal action against Biomet for failing to warn against potential metal hip implant complications, and other counts of negligence.
The Biomet Hip Replacement Surgery Lawsuit is In Re: Biomet M2a Magnum Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation, Case No. 3-12-md-2391, in the U.S. District Court of of Northern Indiana, South Bend Division.
