A new class action lawsuit alleges Beyond Meat Inc. secretly collects and sells visitors’ personal information.
Plaintiff Rebeka Rodriguez filed the class action complaint against Beyond Meat on March 22 in a California state court, alleging violations of the California Invasion of Privacy Act.
The lawsuit accuses Beyond Meat of collecting and selling website visitors’ personal information without their knowledge or consent.
According to claims made in the lawsuit, Beyond Meat’s website, beyondmeat.com, uses tracking technology to gather personal data from visitors, which is then sold to third-party data brokers like Experian.
Rodriguez alleges that Beyond Meat’s actions violate the California Invasion of Privacy Act, which prohibits the unauthorized use of tracking devices to collect personal information.
Beyond Meat uses spyware to track visitors, lawsuit claims
Rodriguez claims Beyond Meat uses a spyware pixel called “Tapad” on its website to identify visitors and track their online behavior. This information is then sold to data brokers, who compile detailed profiles of individuals and sell them to advertisers, marketers and other companies, the lawsuit alleges.
The lawsuit claims that Beyond Meat’s website does not adequately inform visitors about the tracking technology or obtain their consent to collect and sell their personal information.
“Defendant did not obtain Plaintiff’s or class members’ express or implied consent to be subjected to data sharing with Tapad for the purposes of fingerprinting and de-anonymization,” the Beyond Meat class action says.
Rodriguez seeks to represent anyone in California who visited Beyond Meat’s website and had their personal information shared with Tapad or other third parties without their consent. She is suing for violations of the California Invasion of Privacy Act and seeks certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial.
In 2024, Beyond Meat agreed to a $7.5 million class action settlement to resolve allegations that it overstated the protein content and quality of its products.
