A Best Maids class action lawsuit filed by housekeepers who say they were underpaid will be allowed to move forward, according to a recent ruling.
The Chicago-area housekeeping company was hit with the class action lawsuit in December of 2019, claiming it failed to pay housekeepers for the time they spent driving and time spent on longer jobs. The plaintiffs, two former employees, claim the company allotted timeframes for work and travel, but those estimated times weren’t always enough. The complaint alleges the company violated federal labor laws.

Best Maids employs approximately 90 workers and serves as many as 900 clients, according to the Cook County Record. The company asked the judge to dismiss the class action lawsuit calling the housekeepers’ allegations “flimsy.”
Best Maids asserted that housekeepers who finished the job early or had a shorter commute were still paid for the full time allotted by the company. Further, the company claimed that housekeepers who do work over the time allotted for a task need only call to have their pay adjusted.
The company also argued that a class action lawsuit was not the appropriate legal path for the allegations. Best Maids contended that the claims would be far too individualized and that each housekeeper should file their own, individual lawsuit over work hours.
U.S. District Court Judge Matthew Kennelly ruled that the former housekeepers had grounds for a class action lawsuit. The judge noted that the plaintiffs “have not presented an overwhelming case, but they have made the required showing.”
The Best Maids class action lawsuit seeks to represent other housekeepers who worked for the company and were shorted pay for travel and work time.
