A Benicar wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against Daiichi Sankyo and Forest Laboratories, alleging side effects of their hypertension drug caused the death of an Alabama woman.
Plaintiff Kisha J. brings this Benicar wrongful death lawsuit as the administrator for the estate of the decedent, Willie Mae J.
According to the lawsuit, Willie Mae was prescribed and began taking Benicar to treat her high blood pressure in 2006.
As an alleged result of ingesting Benicar, Willie Mae suffered from a host of gastrointestinal injuries including nausea, chronic diarrhea, malnutrition, villous atrophy, sprue-like enteropathy, and colitis.
It is these injuries that ultimately led to her untimely death, the Benicar wrongful death lawsuit states.
What is Benicar?
Benicar (olmesartan) is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) medication manufactured by Forest Laboratories and Daiichi Sankyo, and commonly prescribed to keep blood vessels dilated in patients with high blood pressure, to reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack.
Angiotensin II is a protein that is found naturally in the body and that acts on the cardiovascular system in a variety of ways, including controlling blood pressure.
When angiotensin II is released by the body, it causes blood vessels to narrow, which increases blood pressure and makes the heart work harder to pump blood. Benicar is designed to block angiotensin II, thereby preventing it from constricting blood vessels, and allowing blood to flow more easily through the body.
Possible Benicar Injuries and Side Effects
Benicar gained FDA approval in 2002, but many patients and members of the medical community are just now being cautioned that use of the popular prescription blood pressure drug may be linked to devastating side effects with long-term consequences.
According to research, Benicar users may face an increased risk of serious medical complications, including the following:
- Chronic diarrhea
- Sprue-like enteropathy
- Considerable weight loss
- Intestinal damage
- Villous atrophy
- Colitis
- Celiac disease-like symptoms
- Wrongful death
Unfortunately, because patients and the medical community were not properly warned about potential side effects of Benicar, many Benicar users who were experiencing gastrointestinal problems like chronic diarrhea and sprue-like enteropathy were misdiagnosed as having Celiac disease.
This misdiagnosis and failure to warn about serious Benicar side effects put many patients at risk for hospitalization, permanent intestinal damage, excessive weight loss and malnutrition and even Benicar wrongful death.
Filing a Benicar Wrongful Death Lawsuit
Benicar has been shown to increase the risk of gastrointestinal injuries in many patients. These conditions are very serious and can even be fatal. When an individual dies from Benicar, the surviving family members can file a wrongful death lawsuit.
Benicar wrongful death lawsuits seek compensation for the surviving family members due to the loss of a spouse, parent, child, or sibling. These cases may result in significant compensation for surviving family members or loved ones. Please contact an experienced attorney for a free case review.
