Daiichi Sankyo is facing a new Benicar lawsuit after a patient allegedly suffered serious gastrointestinal complications. One of the complications listed in the lawsuit was Benicar gastroenteritis, which allegedly induced chronic intestinal damage and required medical treatment.
Florida plaintiff Louis P. is filing legal action against the Japanese pharmaceutical company, claiming the company failed to warn against Benicar gastroenteritis. According to the Benicar lawsuit, Louis was prescribed Benicar in November 2009 to treat either his high blood pressure and hypertension.
Benicar is a part of the angiotension II receptor blocker drug family, which works by preventing angiotensin II receptors from binding to the receptors on blood vessels. This allows the blood vessels to remain dilated, reducing the risks of cardiovascular disease.
Benicar is one of the most popular treatment methods to treat high blood pressure or hypertension, healing millions of patients. However, it was not long after the medication was released in the early 2000s that patients began reporting incidents of Benicar gastroenteritis and other gastrointestinal complications.
Overview of Benicar Complications
The FDA had released an official warning regarding Benicar gastrointestinal complications in July 2013, warning patients that there was “clear evidence” of an association between Benicar and these complications.
This agency released this warning after a study was published in August 2012 in the Mayo Clinic medical journal, after reviewing 22 cases of Benicar patients suffering Celiac disease symptoms. These patients had reportedly experienced vomiting, nausea, weight loss, abdominal pain, and villous atrophy.
None of these patients tested positive for Celiac disease, which led to the Mayo Clinic and the FDA suspecting a link. Some of the more serious complications associated with Benicar side effects include villous atrophy, which is a chronic intestinal disease that prevents the body from properly absorbing nutrients from food.
Louis was one of the patients who suffered these alleged Benicar complications. Soon after starting his prescription, Louis reportedly started experiencing symptoms of Benicar gastroenteritis. The side effects he experienced included severe gastrointestinal pain, along with other symptoms of Benicar gastroenteritis.
Louis had required medical treatment for his gastroenteritis symptoms, and had has been reportedly having difficulty to conducting daily activities. Louis further alleges that his Benicar gastroenteritis was completely avoidable, and that Daiichi Sankyo should have warned him against their drug’s side effects.
His Benicar lawsuit is joining multidistrict litigation (MDL) No. 2606, where it will stand alongside similar claims. Louis states that he never would have taken Benicar if he had known the possibility of Benicar gastroenteritis.
This Benicar lawsuit is Case No. 1:17-cv-00531-RBK-JS, in the U.S. District Court of New Jersey, Camden Vicinage Division.
