A federal judge in Texas preliminary approved a $177 million settlement agreed to by AT&T to end claims the company failed to protect the data of consumers during two data breaches.
The settlement creates two non-reversionary settlement funds: $149 million for consumers whose information was leaked to the dark web, and $28 million for customers whose call logs were unlawfully accessed.
The settlement funds will be used to pay for settlement administration costs, attorneys’ fees, service awards and class member benefits, according to a preliminary approval order.
The settlement resolves claims revolving around an AT&T data breach revealed in March 2024 that exposed personal information on the dark web, as well as another data breach the company said compromised phone call and text message records between May 2022 and early 2023.
AT&T data breach settlement provides cash payments, credit monitoring
The AT&T data breach settlement includes all living persons in the United States whose data was exposed in the two breaches.
The settlement provides two types of benefits: cash payments and credit monitoring, according to the order. Cash payments will be provided to class members who submit a valid claim form. The amount of the cash payment will depend on the number of valid claims submitted.
Class members who submit a valid claim form, meanwhile, also may receive up to 24 months of credit monitoring.
The deadline to opt out of or object to the AT&T data breach settlement is Oct. 17, 2025, while a final approval hearing is scheduled for Dec. 3, 2025. AT&T denies any wrongdoing.
In another recent complaint involving AT&T, a group of New York pensioners filed multiple class action lawsuits against the company in May over claims it misled investors about the extensive use and the environmental impact of its lead-sheathed cables
