Did You Know About the Connection Between Antibiotic Levaquin and the Risk of an Aortic Aneurysm?Although all medications carry a risk of side effects, the antibiotic Levaquin has been tied to a possibly deadly condition known as aortic aneurysms or aortic tears.

Research suggests that the antibiotic Levaquin and others in its class may be behind serious aortic issues, some of which can be fatal if left unchecked. Some patients believe the manufacturer should have warned them about the issue and that due to the lack of warning, patients were unnecessarily left in harm’s way.

Research in the medical field indicates that the risk of aortic aneurysms can be severe and can even be fatal if the symptoms are not caught and treated immediately. This research shows that those people taking the antibiotic Levaquin and associated fluoroquinolone medications may be as much as three times more likely to suffer life-threatening injuries to their aorta.

The aorta is the body’s primary artery that carries blood out of the heart. Some of the most common antibiotic Levaquin side effects include an aortic aneurysm or aortic dissection. Previous and current users of fluoroquinolone, such as the antibiotic Levaquin, are at risk.

Despite these significant risks and early indications identified in academic studies, the labels for these medications still do not contain a warning about the risk of aortic damage. Every year, more than 20 million prescriptions are given to people to treat bacterial infections. Anyone who was diagnosed with an aortic aneurysm or aortic dissection within the past 18 months after being prescribed Levaquin may have grounds for a legal claim.

Separate studies published in 2015 identified a connection between collagen damage in the body and fluoroquinolone antibiotic use. The antibiotic Levaquin is one of the most commonly given types of antibiotics and may be associated with this risk. Other severe side effects have already been linked to these types of medications.

Levaquin has been connected to an increased risk of tendon ruptures and researchers were interested in determining whether or not any other collagen associated disorders could serve as complications. The research studies were published in BMJ Open and JAMA Internal Medicine. These studies identified that fluoroquinolone users currently taking the medication have as much as a 143% higher risk of suffering an aortic aneurysm or aortic dissection.

Those users who ingested a fluoroquinolone previously, more than 60 days prior to an aortic dissection or aortic aneurysm, may be facing a 48 percent increased risk. Fluoroquinolone drugs include Noroxin, Floxin, Cipro, Levaquin, and Avelox. These fluoroquinolone medications, including the antibiotic Levaquin, have been named in numerous lawsuits alleging that the drug manufacturers are responsible for failing to warn consumers about the serious side effects prior to taking the medication.

Those patients who have already been significantly affected or who have lost a loved one as a result of aortic dissection or aortic aneurysm, may be eligible to pursue a legal claim after identifying a link between their aortic event and the use of the antibiotic Levaquin.
