anti-aging skincare reviewsAccording to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), a product cannot claim to work like a drug—that is to change the function of the body—without going through the rigorous testing required of drugs. This process requires manufacturers to test new products for efficacy and safety.

“Anti-aging” products, like the Dr. Brandt skincare products, may flirt with drug claims without quite crossing this line. However, even if a product does not make full-on drug claims, they may be liable if they do not live up to their claims. Online reviews reveal that many individuals who have purchased skincare products, including Dr. Brandt products, may not be satisfied that their products lived up to their marketing claims.

Amazon Reviews Reveal Dissatisfied Customers

A quick look at the Amazon reviews for various Dr. Brandt products reveals quite a few dissatisfied customers. For example, on the customer reviews for a product called Dr. Brandt Dark Spot No More Serum, 15 of the 21 reviews are three stars or lower, out of a top score of five. Customers make a variety of complaints, mostly concerning the product’s efficacy. Reviews from customers state that individuals used the products for several weeks without any noticeable change.

In a similar vein, Dr. Brandt BB cream had a similar breakdown in its reviews. Roughly 18 out of 40 reviews were three stars or lower. Some complaints compared the product to cheap instant tan creams due to an orange color tone it allegedly produced. One complainer stated that they “ended up looking like an Oompa-Loompa.” The reviews for Dr. Brandt Pores No More have a similar ratio of positive to negative reviews, nine three stars or lower out of a total of 16 reviews. Customers complain that the products don’t work, or even made pores larger.

Still, even some of the most negative reviews for Dr. Brandt products begrudgingly concede that the products come in very lovely packaging.

More Than Dissatisfied

In most businesses, a few bad Amazon reviews may not mean much. However, in the case of skincare products, false advertising lawsuits have been filed by consumers who feel that products do not perform as advertised. For example, cosmetics giant Estée Lauder has faced legal action in the form of a class action lawsuit over their anti-aging products. A class action settlement over Mario Badescu cream ingredients was reached in January 2014. Similar class action lawsuits have been filed against recognizable cosmetics companies like Clinique and L’Oreal. These false advertising lawsuits allege that these cosmetics companies used false advertising to sell their products, and failed to deliver on marketing promises. False advertising lawsuits like these can cost companies millions of dollars.
