NordVPN class action lawsuit overview:
- Who: Plaintiff Rene Tio filed a class action lawsuit against NordVPN S.A. and Tefincom S.A.
- Why: Tio claims the companies engaged in deceptive and unlawful automatic renewal charging practices.
- Where: The NordVPN class action was filed in Massachusetts federal court.
A new NordVPN class action lawsuit alleges the company engaged in deceptive and unlawful automatic renewal charging practices that saddle consumers with premature subscription renewal fees that are higher than previously agreed upon.
Plaintiff Rene Tio filed the NordVPN class action complaint against NordVPN S.A. and Tefincom S.A. on Nov. 11 in Massachusetts federal court, alleging violations of state consumer protection laws.
NordVPN offers security services such as VPNs, password managers and cloud storage, which users can subscribe to for a set period of time.
However, Tio claims NordVPN renews subscriptions two weeks before they expire, charging customers for another full period without adequate notice.
The lawsuit alleges that these NordVPN renewal charges are significantly higher than the original price, a fact NordVPN fails to disclose.
NordVPN backdates 30-day money-back guarantee, lawsuit claims
Tio also claims NordVPN advertises a “30-day money-back guarantee” but backdates it to the renewal charge date, leaving consumers with little time to cancel and get a refund.
The lawsuit alleges NordVPN renewal practices violate consumer protection laws by misleading customers about the terms of their subscriptions.
Tio says he was charged nearly double the agreed-upon rate when his subscription was renewed two weeks early. When he tried to cancel within what he thought was the 30-day refund period, NordVPN denied his request, the he claims in the class action lawsuit..
The lawsuit claims NordVPN uses dark patterns — design features that exploit consumer decision-making — to trap users into unwanted subscriptions.
Tio is looking to represent anyone in Massachusetts who was charged by NordVPN before the end of their subscription period. He’s suing for violations of state consumer protection laws and seeks certification of the NordVPN class action lawsuit, damages of at least $50 million, fees, costs and a jury trial.
In 2024, a lawsuit filed in Colorado accused NordVPN of similar practices and in 2025 two additional class action lawsuits followed, one filed in Illinois and the other in New York.
