Savage Pet recall overview:

  • Who: Cat food maker Savage Pet issued a recall for certain lots of its chicken-flavored cat food.
  • Why: The cat food recall was initiated over concerns the recalled cat food may contain the H5N1 bird flu virus.
  • Where: The recalled cat food was distributed to retailers in California, Colorado, New York, Pennsylvania and Washington.

Cat food company Savage Pet issued a recall for certain lots of its chicken-flavored cat food over concerns the product may contain the H5N1 bird flu virus.

The cat food recall involves 66 Large Chicken Boxes 84 ounce and 74 Small Chicken Boxes 21 ounce with “best by” dates of Nov. 15, 2026 that were distributed to retailers in California, Colorado, New York, Pennsylvania and Washington.

Consumers who fed the recalled cat food to their pets are advised to watch for symptoms of bird flu infection, including fever, lethargy, low appetite and reddened or inflamed eyes, among other things.

Savage Pet said it is aware of one cat in Colorado who contracted the bird flu virus — and has since recovered — after consuming the recalled pet food, as well as a kitten in New York who contracted the virus after feeding on the recalled lot.

Consumers advised to return recalled Savage Pet cat food for full refund

Consumers are advised not to feed the recalled cat food to pets or animals and urged to return the product immediately to their retailer for “proper destruction” and a full refund.

Savage Pet is also advising consumers to wash their hands and clean surfaces when handling raw products, as humans can become infected if live virus gets into their eyes, nose or mouth.

Consumers with more questions about the cat food recall can contact Savage Pet by email or by phone at 619-270-0295.

Pet food maker Wild Coast Raw issued a similar recall earlier this month for multiple lots of its frozen Boneless Free Range Chicken Formula raw cat food over concerns it could be contaminated with the H5N1 bird flu virus.
